NEW DELHI: The spike in coal requirement due to the steep increase in electricity demand has forced Indian Railways to cancel around 16 mail/express and passenger trains daily in the past couple of weeks to create extra paths for rakes carrying the key ingredient to power plants located across the country. The railway ministry has notified the cancellation of nearly 670 trips of passenger trains till May 24. Over 500 of these trips are for long-distance mail and express trains.
The Railways has also increased the average daily loading of coal rakes to more than 400, which is the highest ever in the past five years.

said the national transporter has committed to provide 415 coal rakes daily, each carrying around 3,500 tonnes, to meet the present demand. They added that this drill will continue for at least two more months to improve stocks at power plants and avoid any crisis in July-August when coal mining is least due to rain.
"There are protests against cancellation of passenger trains in different states, but we have no option left with us as the immediate need is to ensure that there is no coal shortage at power plants and there is no black out. It's a catch 22 situation for us. We hope to get over this temporary phase," said a railway ministry official. The official added that since the power plants are located across the country, the Railways have to run long distance trains and so a large number of coal rakes are in transit for 3-4 days. A large share of domestic coal is transported from the eastern sector to the northern, central and western parts of India.
According to official data, the Railways loaded barely 269 coal rakes daily in 2016-17. It was ramped up in 2017-18 and 2018-19. But during the next two years, the loading fell to 267 rakes per day. Last year, this was increased to 347 per day and till Thursday the number of rakes loaded with coal stood around 400-405 per day. Officials added that there is an unprecedented increase in coal demand this year and rail remains the preferred mode of transport for this.
Coal is used for generating about 70% of India's electricity. The Railways has also taken several steps to increase the loading and transport of coal including running of long-haul trains on both the Indian Railways and dedicated freight corridor networks, intense monitoring of detention of all coal rakes at loading and unloading points and also of their movement by senior functionaries. In case of asset failure on coal routes, the railways has made it mandatory for senior officers to rush to the site for restoration of defects "on priority".
It has also imposed loading restrictions for Kisan rails and parcels on select routes.

Mumbai LTT-Mangaluru Central Matsyagandha Express (12619) entering Mangaluru Central Station (left) and its pairing Mangaluru Central-Mumbai LTT express will be one of the few trains to be hauled by electric locomotive end-to-end from May 1 after the entire Konkan Railway Corporation’s network was recently electrified
With the entire 741 km route network of Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd., a crucial link on the West Coast of the country being certified to operate trains on electric traction on March 28, the Corporation has decided to commence operation of electric loco-hauled coaching (passenger) trains in a phased manner from May 1.

the first phase, the Corporation would receive 10 pairs of passenger trains from neighbouring zones of Central and Southern Railways on electric traction, said a notification of April 21 by KRCL communicated to other Railway zones. Of the 10, six pairs pass through Mangaluru Junction and three of them originate/ terminate at Mangaluru Central/ Junction.
The last of the sections of KRCL’s network to be certified for operating trains on electric traction by the Commissioner of Railway Safety was Ratnagiri in Maharashtra and Thivim in Goa on March 28 this year. This has enabled the Corporation to operate trains on electric traction through its 741 km route network between Thokur near Mangaluru and Roha in Maharashtra.
In a notification issued on April 21, KRCL informed other Railway zones, including the Western, the Northern, the Central and the Southern Railways, that Mail/ Express trains would be operated with electric traction in a phased manner. It gave a list of 10 pairs coaching trains that would be accepted with electric traction by taking them over from Central and Southern Railways.
The six pairs running on the Karnataka coast include, Trains 12619/12620 Mumbai LTT-Mangaluru Central-Mumbai LTT Matsyagandha Express; 12133/12134 Mumbai CSMT-Mangaluru Junction-Mumbai CSMT Express; 12617/12618 Ernakulam-Hazrath Nizamuddin-Ernakulam Mangala Lakshadweep Express; 16346/16345 Thiruvananthapuram-Mumbai LTT-Thiruvananthapuram Netravathi Express, 56640/56641 Mangaluru Central-Madgaon-Mangaluru Central passenger special and 12431/12432 Thiruvananthapuram-Hazrath Nizamuddin-Thiruvananthapuram Rajdhani Express.
The first coaching train to run on electric traction on KRCL network in Karnataka was Train No. 16515 Yeshwantpur-Karwar tri-weekly (day) express on January 20 from Mangaluru Junction. KRCL had been operating a few freight trains on electric traction between Mangaluru Junction and Karwar since May 2021 while Trains 16515/16516 were the first coaching trains to run on electric traction on the section.
KRCL network handles over 35 pairs of coaching trains operating between the southern states and the northern states, including Thiruvananthapuram and Delhi; Thiruvananthapuram-Veraval and many more. Two pairs of trains connect Mangaluru with Mumbai via KRCL network.

IN BRIEF:
However, even the fastest train between the two cities – Jan Shatabdi Express – still takes a minimum of 7 hours
Travel time between Bengaluru and Hubballi will come down by 1 hour from next year as the South Western Railway (SWR) has set the target of completing the doubling and electrification of the entire line by March 2023.

route, the Bengaluru-Hubballi section sees operation of 24 trains, including nine daily trains.
However, even the fastest train between the two cities – Jan Shatabdi Express – still takes a minimum of 7 hours, against the specified travel time of 6 hours 30 minutes, to complete the 469-km journey.
Officials said the works on two key sections of the route, which were held up due to delay in land acquisition on a 45-km stretch, have been speeded up.
As a result, doubling and electrification of the Hubballi south station-Saunshi (20 km) and Devaragudda-Haveri (25 km) sections are set to be completed by the end of the year.
Chief public relations officer Aneesh Hegde said the land acquisition problems have been resolved.
β€œThe electrification target was 342.9 route km. The Chikjajur-Hubballi (190 route km) and Nittur-Hosadurga (152.9 route km) will be completed soon. Our priority is to reduce the travel time by 45 minutes to 1 hour at the earliest,” he said.
Asked about the possibility of installing the inter-block signalling system (IBS), he said all the signalling will be solid state electronic interlocking systems, which are state of the art and come with built-in fail-safe mechanisms.
β€œIBS is needed only when the section gets saturated and if we want to divide a block section into two, to increase section capacity. By doubling, the capacity of the route will increase by approx 40%. The current progress of work has already helped in speeding up of several trains, notably Rani Chennamma Express. We will work to speed up other trains,” he said.
Karnataka Railway Vedike’s Krishna Prasad said the Railways had the capacity to reduce the travel time between the two cities to 5 hours 30 minutes.
β€œIt is a trunk route that will benefit the north Karnataka region. The Railways should complete the doubling and electrification work on the entire line between Bengaluru and Miraj soon. Major work is pending on Miraj-Londa and Londa-Hubli sections. In the coming years, the travel demand on the route will go up and officials should plan accordingly,” he said.

injured in the incident which took place around 9.45 pm, just after the train departed for Puducherry from the Dadar terminus.

The Dadar-Puducherry Chalukya Express was entering on DOWN fast line from platform 7 of the Dadar Terminus, when the CSMT-Gadag Express, which departed around 9.30 pm, dashed it from the rear side on a crossing, the official said.

Quaiser Khalid, commissioner, Government Railway Police, said in a tweet that there was a "minor collision" between the two down trains and the Puducherry Express was being evacuated. This was the second derailment on the Central Railway section this month. Earlier, the Lokmanya Tilak-Jaynagar Express (Pawan Express) had derailed near Nashik in Maharashtra on April 3, 2022.

Relief trains have been moved to the site for restoration of services.

The incident took place a day before the 169th anniversary of the first run of a passenger train in India.

The first passenger train in India (and Asia) ran between Mumbai and Thane on April 16, 1853. The Indian Railway, thus enters into its 170th year of service from Saturday.
