Indian Railways' manufacturing unit the Rail Coach Factory (RCF), Kapurthala rolled out 15 AC 3-tier economy class coaches that will be attached to various mail and express trains. The AC 3-tier economy is touted to be the Railways' most affordable class of air-conditioned travel. The prototype of the AC 3-tier economy class was rolled out from the RCF for oscillation trials on February 10, just three months after the idea was conceived, a statement from the coach factory said.

The design of the coach includes a redesigned AC duct to provide individual vents for each berth. The coach also has an improved and modular design of seats and berths, foldable snack tables in both longitudinal and transverse bays, injury-free spaces and holders for water bottles, mobile phones and magazines., the statement said.

Individual reading lights and mobile charging points are provided for each berth in addition to standard sockets, it said.

Additional berths have been provided in the coach as the number of berths in the new coach has been increased from 72 to 83. The coach also has wider doors making it convenient for specially-abled passengers. RCF has a production plan of 248 coaches in the current and next fiscal years.

The RCF plans to manufacture 248 such coaches in the current and the next fiscal years.

Gupta said, "It's the cheapest and finest AC travel in the world and is a landmark in the glorious journey of the RCF. This product will bring many changes in rail travel which will now be more convenient besides being safer and faster."

He said in view of the government's COVID-19 guidelines, only 50 per cent of the RCF's staff was engaged in manufacturing the coaches.

"Besides, due to the lockdown in most parts of the country, the supply of railway material to the RCF was greatly affected. Despite this, the RCF administration and staff, working with full commitment, produced more than 100 coaches in May 2021 which is very encouraging," he added.

Asked about the fare for the AC 3-tier class coach, Gupta said it will be decided by the Railway Board.

Officials said the AC 3-tier class is the only travel class in railways that makes a clear profit for the national transporter. The AC 3-tier economy class is expected to offer AC travel to the masses while keeping the fares affordable.

At present, the cost is estimated to be between ₹2.8 and ₹3 crore per coach, which is around 10 per cent more than the existing AC 3-tier coaches.

"The earning potential of these coaches is also higher for the national transporter, owing to more capacity," an official said.

This might be a replacement to Sleeper coaches too in the near future... Since IR is upgrading tracks and OHEs for 160 kmph and achieving this speed is possible only when nonAC coaches are removed since they might cause air drag at higher speeds.

Amid reports of shortage of oxygen supply for Covid-19 patients across several states, the Indian Railways is all set to operate ‘Oxygen Express’ trains for the transport of liquid medical oxygen (LMO) and oxygen cylinders, the ministry of railways said in a statement on Sunday.

Noting that oxygen is a key element in the treatment of certain medical conditions in the Covid-19 infection, the railways ministry said it has explored the technical feasibility of transportation of LMO tankers at the request of Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra governments.

The ministry said that a green corridor is being created to ensure fast movement of Oxygen Express trains, which will ply after the completion of technical trials. Following the trials, the railway ministry said, “empty tankers would be moved from Kalamboli, and Boisar railway stations in and near Mumbai, and sent to Vizag and Jamshedpur, Rourkela, and Bokaro, for loading of liquid medical oxygen tankers.”

The announcement comes a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a review meeting in which he directed that the installation of approved medical oxygen plants should be sped up. Officials said that 162 PSA oxygen plants are being installed in 32 states and Union territories from PM CARES and one lakh cylinders are being procured, which will be supplied to states soon.

“A supply mapping plan for 12 high burden states till 30th April has also been undertaken. The Prime Minister also said that supply of oxygen required for production of medicines and equipment necessary to handle the pandemic should also be ensured,” PM Modi’s office said in a statement.

On Friday too, PM Modi had reviewed the status of oxygen availability to ensure adequate supply and told officials to ensure seamless and free movement of tankers carrying oxygen across the country.

“The Government has exempted all interstate movement of oxygen tankers from registration of permits to enable easier movement. PM was informed that States and transporters have been asked to ensure tankers move round the clock with drivers working in shifts to ensure faster turnaround and adequate capacity to meet the surge in demand,” the Prime Minister’s office said, adding that cylinder filling plants will also be permitted to operate 24 hours with necessary safeguards.

The Centre has also allowed industrial cylinders to be used for medical oxygen after due purging. “Similarly nitrogen and argon tankers will be automatically allowed to be converted to oxygen tankers to overcome the potential shortage of tankers,” the statement added. Efforts are also being made to import medical grade oxygen, officials told PM Modi.

Nazia Tabassum, a resident of Mau, had her centre for the examination in Varanasi. Tabassum had a reservation in Chhapra-Varanasi Intercity Special (05111).

On the examination day, the train, which was supposed to reach Mau Junction at 6:25 am was running late by more than 2.5 hours due to fog.

As the train had not reached Mau even after 8 am, Tabassum informed her brother Anwar Jamal that the exam would be missed due to the delay in the train.

After this, Jamal tweeted to the Railways and informed that the examination would be missed if the train did not reach on time. The Railways took note of Jamal's tweet and ran the 2.5-hour delayed train at full speed to reach Varanasi by 11 am.

Speaking to ANI, Nazia Tabassum said, "My examination was from 12 noon at Vallabh Vidyapeeth Balika Inter College in Varanasi. The train in which I had a reservation was running more than 2.5 hours late. Then, I called my brother and he tweeted to the Railways for help."

Tabassum said after her brother's tweet, Railways called her and assured her that she would reach on time. Finally, she reached the examination centre in Varanasi 45 minutes before the examination was to begin.

Anwar Jamal, Tabassum's brother told ANI,
"I sought help from the Railways through a tweet. After 10 minutes, railway authorities made a call on my sister's phone and assured us that we would reach on time.
The train arrived at Mau at 9:18 am and reached Varanasi by 10:57 am."

Jamal thanked railways on Twitter after they reached the examination centre on time.
