As the Union Minister of Railways, Suresh Prabhu would lay the foundation stone marking the beginning of work on laying a third broad gauge line connecting Tambaram and Chengalpattu, on Sunday, the Tambaram railway station and its surrounding areas have received a facelift.
The Union Railways Minister would also flag off a train service between Chennai Central and Howrah, according to railway officials.
As part of the inaugural ceremony, the Southern Railway has added lustre to the staircases on the eastern side of the station, having painting them in decorative colours.
at the site said the paint would last for a longer duration than the regular one.
However, it requires maintenance and once it gets faded, a new coat should be applied.
Workers were seen painting the main entrance on the western side and the road around the railway grounds was being black-topped.
Apart from this, hundreds of workers were engaged in making a dais ready at the venue of the event – which is the Railway Grounds.
Southern Railway Divisional Railway Manager - Chennai Anupam Sharma and other officials, along with senior officials of Government Railway Police and Railway Protection Force, visited the railway station and the Railway Grounds to oversee the arrangements for the function on Sunday.
Located 60 km from Chennai Beach, Chengalpattu is a fast-growing satellite town in neighbouring Kancheepuram district from where thousands travel to the State capital every day.
Now there are four lines between Chennai and Tambaram, two for long-distance trains and the other two for suburban trains.
Thousands of commuters from areas between Tambaram and Chengalpattu will, in a year’s time, have better access to Chennai Beach.
The commissioning of the doubling work from Chengalpattu to Villupuram along with the third line between Tambaram and Chengalpattu will ensure dedicated tracks for operating additional suburban train services between Chengalpattu and Chennai Beach — which are about 250 a day now.

LGD : SCR Loco Shed in Expansion Mode
HYDERABAD: The electric loco shed of the South Central Railway at Lallaguda in Secunderabad will be expanded to enable it to handle 225 locomotives (engines) for maintenance and complete overhauling of passenger and goods trains.
At present, the ELS is handling about 200 locomotives. The proposal on expansion, to cost about Rs 16 crore, has been submitted to the Railway Board and, when taken up, the work will be completed in a year’s time, Secunderabad divisional railway manager Ashesh Agarwal has said.
Kazipet electric and diesel loco shed will also be expanded to enable it to handle 175 locomotives. Now, it is handling 150 locomotives.
Agarwal, along senior divisional electrical engineer and head of ELS K Tourya and SCR chief public relations manager M.Umashankar Kumar took mediapersons on a tour of the facility here on Tuesday and explained about the functioning of the workshop.
The ELS, constructed at a cost of Rs 25 crore with initial handling capacity of 72 railway engines, completed 20 years of operation.
Agarwal said the Lallaguda shed was adopting the best practices to maintain locomotives with a meagre manpower of 3.02 persons per loco as on November 1 as against an all-India average of 3.68.
“Locomotives are periodically maintained as per the time frame. Within 90 days of a locomotive being brought to the shed, it is fully checked and repaired and dispatched on the same day. Again, after 18 months, the locomotive is brought to the shed for major overhauling which takes about six days and complete periodic overhauling is done every 10 years,” Agarwal explained.
The shed takes care of Wide Area Passenger (WAP) of 88 locomotives and Wide Area Goods (WAG) of 112 engines. A locomotive which comes for maintenance and modification is received and dispatched by the PPO section.
Other sections like machine shop, traction motor, bogie, auxiliary machines, electronics, general, SPM, TFP, pneumatic, technical tool room and store also paly their part in the maintenance of a locomotive.
The DRM said the Secunderabad division stood fifth in cargo loading and eighth in having originating passengers.
“It is the only division of Indian Railways to be among the top eight in both categories,” he claimed.
Till November in 2015-16 the division loaded 43.6 tonnes of freight as against 41.6 tonnes last year (4.8 pc increase). Its earnings from freight went up 21 pc.
It earned Rs 844 crore from passenger traffic as against 796 crore last year, an increase of 6 pc.

SR : TPJ : Journey of a woman loco pilot
In late September 2013, P. Narayana Vadivu broke new ground in the annals of Southern Railway.
When the 39-year-old woman Loco Pilot cranked the nearly 120-tonne diesel locomotive to haul an empty freight train from Vriddhachalam to Ariyalur, it was the first time in Southern Railway history that an “all women crew” headed by her executed the task.
journey for this mother of two who stormed into a male dominated profession has been a smooth sail since then.
The lone woman diesel Loco Pilot of Tiruchi Railway Division, Ms. Vadivu is today in the company of a handful of women colleagues performing the same task in the Southern Railway zone encompassing five divisions.
Adept in piloting diesel locos of varied types including the 4,500 high horsepower EMD locos with alacrity, confidence and ease, Ms. Vadivu candidly says she never harboured any dream of becoming a Loco Pilot.
Hailing from Ramachandra Nagar village in Tirunelveli district, the diploma holder in electronics and communication joined the railway in 2004 as a Track Woman in Pattukottai.
“I never knew then that women could become a Loco Pilot”.
Encouragement from a railway staff prompted her to take up the departmental exam for the post of Assistant Loco Pilot. This turned her destiny as she became an Assistant Loco Pilot (ALP) in October 2006 in Tiruchi Division.
Having served as an ALP for five years, Ms. Vadivu got an elevation as a “Shunter” in 2011 piloting locos singlehandedly for the first time from the yard to the platform and back.
“That’s when I got the opportunity of piloting diesel locos individually,” she says. The freight train with an “all women crew” she piloted from Vriddhachalam to Ariyalur was a momentous occasion in her professional career. “I was a bit afraid then, but the presence of a Loco Instructor in the cabin boosted my confidence.” The transition from a Loco Pilot of goods train to passenger trains came in June 2014.
From then on, Ms. Vadivu has been piloting passenger trains in Tiruchi – Karaikal, Tiruchi – Cuddalore, Tiruchi – Mayiladuthurai and Tiruchi – Mannargudi sections.
Vadivu has received awards twice for her timely action in averting accidents.
The job of a Loco Pilot is a challenging one keeping her away from her family often. Yet, the passion for driving keeps me energised, she says. “I feel really proud of being a Loco Pilot and working as an equal with my male counterparts,” she adds.
For Narayana Vadivu, every trip is a new experience
