Train movement along the main New Jalpaiguri-New Cooch Behar route got disrupted for an hour on Friday afternoon as a youth travelling by the Sealdah-bound Uttarbanga Express suddenly mounted on the engine and tried to bring down the pantograph when the train halted at Falakata station here.
Lakshminath Bodo, the passenger from Barpeta district of Assam, caught fire and suffered severe burns.A pantograph is a kind of a power collector mounted on electric trains.
Bodo was initially admitted to the super-specialty hospital in Falakata and later sent to North Bengal Medical College and
Hospital in Siliguri in a critical condition.
Sources said around 3.45pm, as the train reached Falakata station, people suddenly heard a big thud. They then saw an object on the top of the engine that was afire. Within minutes, they realised it was a man.
Immediately, power connectivity of the engine was snapped by railway authorities. A fire engine was rushed in.
Bystanders and passengers panicked.
As the train reached Falakata, we heard a loud sound and got off the train to see an object on fire on the engine and later realised it was a man,” said Rohit Das, a passenger headed to Calcutta.
A railway official said they as well as RPF and GRP personnel rushed to the spot and Bodo was brought down with the help of a ladder and rope.
“Preliminary probe revealed the youth had touched the pantograph to bring it down and suffered serious injuries,” said a railway official.
Train movement along tracks got disrupted for about an hour.
“It is a rare and unfortunate incident. An inquiry has been ordered. We are trying to find out why he tried to grab the pantograph,” said S. Chanda, the chief PRO of the Northeast Frontier Railway.

The world-class terminal readied by the Constructions Division of the South Western Railway Zone was ready two months ago and awaits inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra ModiThe two sharp spells of rain in Bengaluru this week have completely exposed the oft-repeated claims of Sir M Vesvesvaraiah railway terminal in Baiyappanahalli as a 'world-class one'. The 314 crore rupees terminal, India’s first air-conditioned one, had its subway connecting all platforms flooded and water seeping from the roof of the buildings in its campus including the one where the signalling panel is placed.
The world-class terminal readied by the Constructions Division of the South Western Railway Zone was ready two months ago and awaits inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It is lying in
an idle state now though the new stabling line is utilized to relieve a bit of congestion at KSR railway station and Bengaluru Cantonment by diverting trains from there for stabling hereA senior railway source told The New Indian Express, “The subway that connects all the platforms from 1 to 7 were flooded with water, that reached up to the knee level. Water had seeped in through the top and reached the floor of the main terminal which is fully glassed and the station master building within the huge campus.” The ducts with electrical wires too had water posing as a huge safety risk for anyone, he added.
An official said that the worrying part was that the leakage had also happened in the room housing the control panel that takes care of the entire signalling operations.
“The rains on Wednesday and Friday were not heavy. Despite that so much damage has happened. If any malfunctioning happens to this Rs 40-crore signalling board, then it will have a major impact on safety of train operations itself, a serious issue,” he said.
The flaw is in the fact that a slope had not been provided above the station master’s building for rain to peter down as done in most buildings, another official explained.
“The rain has accumulated and seeped through the concrete to the floor below. It is shocking that a station whose cost had shot up from Rs 160 crore to Rs 314 crore and incorporated many passenger amenities has such a flaw in its design and construction,” another official said.
Asked for an explanation, an SWR constructions official attempted to play it down completely. “It is not a big issue. There is a gap between the constructions joint between two buildings. Water is seeping through the gap. We will be fixing the problem in a day,” he said.
However, another engineer said major strengthening or some changes need to be done across the roofing of the buildings could take a few weeks to set it right.
This is the second time that designing issues are affecting the station. When it was racing towards a June 2019 deadline, officials realized during the construction stage that the engineering design plan had miscalculated 70 metres which meant that a portion of the train would stop much beyond the platform.
The plan had to be scrapped, two phases of the station merged into one and the terminal finally readied by February 2021.

Fewer trains, better infra helped SWR achieve a rare milestone last week — all trains were 100% on-time
The trouble trains have to keep to the time table is common knowledge across the country. However, Covid seems to
have changed the situation for the better. Now, most of the trains in the State are almost right on time. In fact, the south
Western Railways
(SWR) achieved a rare milestone this week when all the trains in the state were 100 per cent punctual.
In fact, SWR which was last but one in punctuality among all the railway zones is now third in the country on timeliness.
Aneesh Hegde, Chief public relations officer of SWR told Bangalore Mirror that all the mails achieved the highest ever
punctuality on April 1. Presently, SWR is operating 139 Mail/Express trains. Western Railway and North western
Railway have got the first and second positions respectively.
Before the Covid struck, the country when all the trains were operational, the punctuality rate was 83.2 per cent and we
have examples of trains running late and many hours behind schedule. However, post Covid, railways have been able to
restore only 70 per cent of the trains. “This feat has been achieved earlier. But, in recent times it is only now we have
been able to (approx last two years). Though the 100 per cent punctuality was of that particular day (April 11), the
cumulative average has been 96 per cent since the financial year 2020-21. In the last two to three years, a number of
track related infrastructure works were being undertaken.
Completion of doubling of 228 km, raising of speed upto 100kmph, and 110kmph in several sections, upgradation of
signalling to Electronic Interlocking, Electrifi cation of 303 route kms etc have helped in achieving better punctuality. Of
course, better maintenance of assets (track, locomotive) and alert staff that contributed to a better safety record also
helped keep tracks free of obstruction, and stations free of congestion/detention”, Hegde said.
Prior to covid, SWR ranked 16th out of 17 Zones in punctuality record. But this was due to major infra works going on in
full swing. Now, we are seeing the results of the track and signal development works.
High speed stretches
Currently, the maximum speed at which mail trains operate within the state is 110 kilometres per hour at the
following stretches:
* Yeshwanthpur to Tumkur- 64 kilometres
* Bengaluru to Jolarpettai- 140.2 kilometres
* Ghataprabha to Chikkodi- 4.1 kilometres
* Mojordo to Sankval- 8.9 kilometres
* Sanverdam Church to Madgaon junction - 13.6 kilometres
* Londa to Miraj- 185.7 kilometres
* Birur to Chikkajajur- 38.2 kilometres

Trains will be increased to 130 kmph between Tatanagar to Rourkela from Thursday 15 April. Trains between Rourkela to Jharsuguda will start operating from May 15 at a speed of 130. This information was given by DRM Vijay Kumar Sahu of Chakradharpur Railway Division while talking to the media. Currently, the speed from Howrah to Tata has been increased to 130 km per hour.
He advised the common people to travel only when necessary, ignoring any rumors and follow the Corona instructions and travel on time by making a reservation. While traveling, keep the sanitizer, mask and paper snaps together. In response to a question, he said that after the work of electrification between Tatanagar to Gurumahisani, the work of the Commissioner
of Railway Safety has been completed.
The CSR will be inspected soon after completion of the work till Badampahar. On the suggestion of extending the passenger train between Tata to Chakradharpur to Rourkela, the proposal for this has been sent to headquarters. It will be run once the week is allowed. On the question of overcharging in the name of special trains by the Railways, he said that this is the time of odd situation of Kovid. At present, about fifty percent of the train is running as compared to earlier.
When trains were stopped, everyone realized that rail travel was much more economical than other means. He asked for help on Rail or 139 for help. Please arrive an hour before train time. Complain to us when overcrowded. He said that generally a train has a capacity of nine hundred passengers on average. If the waiting list is four to five hundred in a train, then the cloned train of that train will be run an hour before or after the hour of that train. Clone train will also have facilities as per the main train. For this, one-two racks will be kept in ready condition at the divisional level.
