Mangaluru Central was one of the 50 stations chosen for redevelopment by then Railway Minister Mamta Banerjee in 2009, but nothing has happened so far. Some of the other stations in Karnataka mentioned in the 2009 budget, including Yeshwantpur and Baiyappanahalli in Bengaluru, have been redeveloped. | Photo Credit: H.S. Manjunath
It is back to the drawing board for the railway station development project for Mangaluru as the Railway Ministry has decided to redevelop Mangaluru Central Railway Station instead of Mangaluru Junction.
Will this lead to more intra statte trains from Mangalore Central? Or more trains to Kerala?
Just beautification is not sufficient. More platforms and more trains to Karnataka are needed.
To avoid zonal issues, develop Mangalore port as a terminal and handover to SR. All Kerala trains can run from there. Handover MAQ to SWR or KR. All Karnataka trains and north and east bound trains can run from MAQ.
None of the Kerala originating trains towards Konkan are running via MAQ. After redevelopment, atleast 8 trains should run via MAQ.
VSKP feel neglected, but more than 2 dozen trains are running via VSKP with loco reversal. So, why not run trains via MAQ?
Reduction in number of zones in Karnataka needed. Only Then, trains can run from coastal area to interior and north Karnataka.
Even UP has 4 zones. But Karnataka has 5 zones and going to get another (SCOR) !!!
Southern Railway officials led by commissioner of railway safety (CRS) Abhai Kumar Rai carried out a statutory safety inspection on the 43km-long newly-electrified railway section between Podanur and Pollachi Junction on Monday, The commissioner checked electrical, engineering and signalling works on the section. A high-speed trial run, with a special train formation, was held from Pollachi to Podanur railway station. The special train was hauled by an electric locomotive. An observation car with modern equipment, to observe and record various aspects of the electrification works, was part of the special train formation. While railway had allocated Rs 159 crore for the Dindigul - Pollachi – Palakkad electrification work, Rs 31 crore was spent on Podanur section.
Since the section falls between Salem and
Unless Podanur to Madurai comes under Madurai division, no useful trains can be expected in this route. Each division will fight and public will travel by buses.
CHENNAI: With single railway lines reaching saturation and demand for new lines growing, the railway board has given a green light to conduct a traffic and location survey for doubling of 385 km of single lines in three routes.
The construction wing of the Southern Railway recently commenced the final location survey for laying a second line in Erode-Karur (65 km), Katpadi-Vellore-Tiruvannamalai-Villupuram (160.10 km), and Salem-Karur-Dindigul (160 km) sections. The funds were allocated by the railway board in the Budget.
The final survey involves assessing the tentative route along with the quantum of land
Erode Palani line- 110 km- is not progressing at all.
Why can't we explore a Tiruppur to Udumalaipettai line via Palladam? Just 60-65 kms and links Tiruppur with its taluks of Palladam and Udumalaipettai. Can act as a Erode Palani line with 150 kms -- Erode Tiruppur Palladam Udumalai Palani. Can act as a chord link for Coimbatore Erode line and Coimbatore Madurai line.

In SWR, even after almost 2 decades of existence, no new railway line is laid (not gauge conversion). All are 'Work in progress'. Be it Tumkur Rayadurga, Tumkur Chitradurga Davangere, Kolar Madanapalli, Gadag Wadi, Munirabad Mahaboob nagar, Shimoga Harihar, Bagalkot Kudachi. Everything at snail pace or stopped forever.
Even in available lines, SWR won't run good trains. The TT and route will be made so horrible to dissuade passengers from using trains.
Just see adjoining SCR. How many new linkages are created in the last 10-15 years and compare with
Also, private bus operators.
KSRTC is able to stall running of proper trains in Bangalore Mangalore and Mangalore Hubli sectors. If a good train runs in Bangalore Mangalore sector, atleast 150 KSRTC buses and another 60-70 private buses will go off the road. Atleast 20-25 buses will be out in Hubli sector.
When railways increased number of trains in Bangalore Mysore route, almost all KSRTC buses became empty.
Again same fate in Ballari, Bijapur, Belgaum sector also.
For passenger pocket friendly bus services, one should go to Tamilnadu buses. They may not look good, but provide excellent connection for entire state.
For day and night and punctual services across the state, one should learn from Kerala KSRTC.
All APSRTC buses are fitted with GPS.
None of these can be claimed by Karnataka KSRTC. Just having more volvo buses does
