Thanisandra railway station, off Nagawara Main Road, has been closed for several years. Despite the station being located around 2km from Manyata Tech Park and near the tech corridors on Outer Ring Road, South Western Railway is yet to take steps to open it for passengers.
Residents near the station, which falls in Bengaluru North constituency, have approached SWR to convert it into a halt station like the ones at Hoodi and Kempegowda International Airport.
While Hoodi halt station near Whitefield was funded through Bengaluru Central MP PC Mohan’s MP-LAD (Local Area Development)
scheme, KIA halt station is being built by the Bangalore International Airport Limited and is likely to open soon.Thanisandra resident HR Sreenivasa Rao, who submitted a petition along with signatures of around 450 citizens, said: “There are many residential localities in Thanisandra, Hegde Nagar and off Airport Road. The station should be revived at the same location which also has the advantage of BMTC connectivity. As the revival project cost is Rs 3 crore and railways already have the required land, SWR could fund this project and restart the station soon.”
Karnataka Railway Vedike member KN Krishna Prasad said: “Thanisandra station was earlier functioning with a ticket counter but railways demolished it during Channasandra-Yelahanka doubling work five years ago. In fact, a Bengaluru-Vijayawada train used to stop there. Now, areas near the station have developed and several trains pass through this section, so a stoppage will help many people.”
Bengaluru divisional railway manager Ashok Kumar Verma said no halt station has been sanctioned yet in Thanisandra. Construction work is on for a signal control room, which he said, is for intermediate block systems (IBS), a signalling system to help in operations.

If existing stations are closed, then how can we expect road traffic to come down?
Another case is of Hebbal station. It will be better to improve infrastructure and give importance to Hebbal station also.

Yes correct. Hebbal should also be given importance. In fact I used to think that Hebbal was closer to Manyata Tech Park. Also in an earlier notification where few trains were planned to by pass YPR ( DR-PDY, DR-Tirunelveli group of trains, remember seeing it mentioned that Hebbal was a proposed stop). Not sure if the stn can accommodate 15-16 coaches. But yes it should be developed. Road connectivity next to stn is good

Stations:  Thanisandra/THSA
Much has been said about how Thanisandra Railway Station can serve as an important junction if the commuter railway system becomes a reality, considering its proximity to a part of the Information Technology corridor. However, it turns out that all documents related to the station, falling under Railway Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda’s constituency of Bangalore North, are missing. When a Bangalore resident asked for details on the station, currently closed and located off Nagawara Main Road after the K.G. Halli underbridge, he was told that the file was “untraceable”.Sanjeev Dyamannavar, in an RTI query, asked whether the station was operational and if not, why.The reply, dated April 1 this year, said, “Thanisandra is not open for passenger traffic.”When asked for reasons, the reply was, “Reasons for closure could not be ascertained, as the subject file is not traceable.”The reply made it clear that no information was denied to the RTI applicant.
also said that Railways had received no request from citizens or elected representatives to reopen the station in the recent past.
The RTI was signed by a Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, Bangalore City Junction.
‘No plan yet’
Anil Agarwal, Divisonal Railway Manager, Bangalore, South Western Railway, said there was no plan to start a station or halt trains at Thanisandra.
There are only two passenger trains passing through it and mail or express cannot stop there.
Survey needed
He said, “A survey should show that there was demand to stop trains at this station.”
