The rail electrification of the 44 Route Km (RKM) Kollam-Punalur and 124 RKM Palakkad-Pollachi-Palani corridors are to be completed along with the 673 RKM km targeted by Southern Railway during 2021-22.
This is part of the ambitious goal to switch over to ‘Green Railways’ by electrifying the balance Broad Gauge (BG) routes by December 2023 to achieve 100 % electrification of BG routes.

other BG stretches to be completed are Madurai-Manamadurai (45 RKM), Nagapattinam-Velankanni (10 RKM), Salem-Talaivasal (73 RKM), Pollachi-Podanur (38 RKM), Thalaivasal-Vridhachalam (66 RKM), Tiruchchirappalli-Pudukottai-Karaikudi (90 RKM), Karaikudi-Manamadurai-Virudunagar (124 RKM) and Manamadurai-Ramanathapuram (62 RKM).
The rail electrification will facilitate elimination of diesel traction resulting in significant reduction in its carbon footprint and environmental pollution. In addition, a cent % electrification by 2023 would result in annual savings of ₹ 14,500 crore for railways.
In the 5,080 RKM of Southern Railway, 3,529 RKM accounting for about 70 % has been electrified till March 2021. As envisaged in National Rail Plan & Vision 2024, Southern Railway has also geared up to complete electrification of all the BG routes under it by December 2023. As much as 187 RKM of electrified lines were commissioned in 2020-21. As of May 2021, 71 % of the BG network has been electrified. Instead of making available funds from the budget, electrification is now being financed through Extra Budgetary Resources. Around ₹21,000 crore is expected to be incurred for completion of electrification.
Besides making an environmentally friendly mode of transport, the railways can go for haulage of heavier freight trains and longer passenger trains with high haulage capacity of Electric Locomotives leading to increased throughput. Increased sectional capacity by eliminating detention on account of traction change and reduced operating and maintenance cost of Electric Loco are the benefits from the switch over.

Stating that the delay in resumption of passenger trains that pass through junctions in the region is affecting the passengers, the District Congress has urged the Railways to resume the operation of trains at the earliest.
In a letter to the General Manager of Southern Railway, K.N. Basha, vice-president of the Erode District Congress Minority Wing and former member of Zonal Railway User’s Consultative Committee, welcomed the railway’s decision to operate eight trains from different regions of the country to Kevadiya in Gujarat, where the Statue of Unity is located.

said the passenger trains connecting Coimbatore and Salem and Coimbatore and Tirunelveli that passed through Erode Railway Station were stopped in March 2020 due to COVID-19 pandemic. These trains served the working people who moved between these cities every day and delay in resuming the train services had caused immense hardship to people. The petition said workers were forced to spend more money on transportation every day when compared to the train fare.
Likewise, non-operating passenger train from Salem to Tirunelveli was affecting devotees in Karur and Madurai as they depended on the train service to reach the temples. “When the Central government is keen on operating eight trains to Gujarat, it is not concerned about the immense hardship faced by the working people every day,” the petition said and wanted the train services to resume at the earliest.

“This resulted in the Railways Commercial Division marketing more of its services. New avenues of traffic were considered,” says G Maria Michael, Public Relations Officer (PRO) of Southern Railways, Salem Division.
The search for new avenues of revenue led to the Railways to tap in an opportunity to transport mechanical paddy harvesters from the Salem region to other parts of southern India.
There are at least 3,000 mechanical paddy harvesters in Chinnasalem, some 90 km from Salem and 250-odd km from Chennai, that are transported every year by road to Odisha, West Bengal, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana for harvest operations.
The Hindu BusinessLine reported that in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts alone, nearly 90 per cent of the farmers who have cultivated paddy in about one lakh hectares prefer to use harvesters to harvest paddy.
“Until last year, the harvesters were taken by road in trucks and tractors. This was time-consuming and expensive too,” said Michael.
Expenses in transporting harvesters by road include fuel and toll charges, besides wear and tear.
That 3,000 harvesters being moved from Chinnasalem to Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh presented a good business opportunity to the Railways, whose commercial division team began negotiations with the owners of the harvesters.
“The idea had been there early on, but getting the orders was a challenge. Many rounds of negotiations had to be held with the owners and costs were worked out,” says Michael.
Ultimately, it worked out to be a win-win situation for fall. For the owners of harvesters, it was transporting their machines at an economical cost and for the Railways, it was the much-needed revenue.
Farmers also stood to gain as these harvesters could reach their farms on time, instead of waiting nervously, given various delays and risks in transportation by road.
“All the stakeholders stand to gain from this. This is a seasonal activity, but we hope this arrangement will continue,” the PRO said.
With the finer aspects of the arrangement worked out, the Southern Railways operated its first service transporting 85 vehicles to Nalgonda in Telangana.
The Railways transported not just the harvesters, but also tractors, trucks and mini-lorries along with them that carry these tractors to the farms.
The Southern Railways followed this by operating two rakes with 100 vehicles to Suratkal near Mangaluru in Karnataka.
According to sources, another rake left Chinnasalem for Eluru in Andhra Pradesh yesterday (3 November).
One of the advantages that these owners of harvesters have is that they can simply roll in their vehicles on to the wagons at Chinnasalem and then roll off at their final destination.
This is the sort of RO-RO system seen in some of the seaports.
“In Chinnasalem, the owners made use of a ramp to load on to the wagon,” Michael said.
According to experts, the Commercial Division will have to get various clearances, particularly while crossing bridges, before such operations are commenced. There are issues with the height, especially on electrified tracks. These clearances came in quickly.
The transportation of Chinnasalem paddy harvesters could now, perhaps, make railways offer such RO-RO services to trucks carrying other goods, experts say.

भिलाई इस्पात संयंत्र (बीएसपी) में निर्मित रेल पटरी से सेलम स्टील प्लांट में बर्तन बनाया जा रहा है। भारतीय रेलवे के मानक पर खरा नहीं उतरने वाली पटरी को गलाकर स्टेनलेस स्टील के बर्तन बनाए जा रहे हैं। इससे भारतीय इस्पात प्राधिकरण-सेल की इकाई सेलम संयंत्र को उच्च गुणवत्तायुक्त कच्चा माल उपलब्ध हो रहा है। स्टील के बर्तन की गुणवत्ता भी सुधर रही है। सेल की छवि बेहतर हो रही है। साथ ही भिलाई इस्पात संयंत्र में डंप रेल पटरी की निकासी होने से जगह खाली हो रही है।

इस्पात संयंत्र के अधिकारी बता रहे हैं कि कोरोना संक्रमण काल की वजह से रेलवे ने छोटी साइज की रेल पटरी की मांग कम कर दी है। इससे रेल पटरी परिवहन का भार भी कम हो गया। अब यार्ड में रखी रेलवे द्वारा खारिज पटरी को बाहर निकाला जा रहा है। पहले फ्रेश पटरी भेजने की प्रक्रिया में इस ओर सफलता नहीं मिल पा रही थी। अब मौका मिलते ही इस काम को तेजी से किया जा रहा है।
बीएसपी रोज करीब एक हजार टन से ज्यादा रेल पटरी तमिलनाडु स्थित सेलम स्टील प्लांट को भेज रहा है। बताया जा रहा है कि यार्ड में करीब 30 हजार टन से ज्यादा पटरी डंप है। फ्रेश रेल पटरी की कीमत प्रति टन 60 हजार रुपये है। कोरोना संक्रमण काल की वजह से रेलवे की परियोजनाओं पर विराम लगा हुआ है। रेलवे भिलाई इस्पात संयंत्र को रेल पटरी का आर्डर भी कम दे रहा है। ऐसे में बीएसपी अपने यहां डंप रेल पटरी को बेचकर जगह खाली कर रहा है।
अधिकारी बता रहे हैं कि स्टेनलेस स्टील में क्रोमियम और मैगनीज का मिश्रण होता है। भिलाई इस्पात संयंत्र निर्मित रेल पटरी में मैगनीज होता है। रेल पटरी को गलाने के बाद सिर्फ क्रोमियम मिलाकर इसको बर्तन के लायक तैयार करते हैं। इससे सेल को सस्ते दर पर कच्चा माल उपलब्ध हो रहा है।
सेलम को पटरी भेजने का है ये तीन कारण

भिलाई इस्पात संयंत्र के जनसंपर्क विभाग का कहना है कि भारतीय रेलवे मानक के अनुरूप ही रेल पटरी लेती है। अनुबंध के मुताबिक भारतीय रेलवे को दी जाने वाली पटरी किसी और को नहीं बेच सकते हैं। ढलाई के दौरान रेलवे को लगता है कि पटरी में कहीं कुछ कमी है तो उसे वह बाहर कर देती है। इस पटरी को कामर्शियल रेल पटरी बोलते हैं। फिर, इसे कहीं भी बेचा जा सकता है। निजी कंपनियां भी इसे अपने इस्तेमाल के लिए खरीदती हैं। इसी पटरी को सेलम स्टील भेजा जा रहा है, जिससे वहां स्टेनलेस स्टील का बर्तन बनाया जा रहा है।
सेलम निर्भर है सेल इकाइयों पर
भारतीय इस्पात प्राधिकरण-सेल के अधिकारी बता रहे हैं कि सेलम स्टील प्लांट के पास न खदान है और न ही एकीकृत संयंत्र जैसी सुविधा। वह दूसरी इकाइयों पर निर्भर है। सेलम के आर्क वेल्डिंग फर्नेस में रेल पटरी व अन्य को गलाकर बर्तन का उत्पादन किया जाता है। भिलाई इस्पात संयंत्र सेलम को स्लैब लंबे समय से भेजता रहा है। अब इसमें रेल पटरी को भी शामिल किया जा चुका है। स्लैब से ही स्टील की चादर आदि का उत्पादन होता है।
वर्जनः
भिलाई इस्पात संयंत्र सेलम प्लांट को स्लैब के साथ कामर्शिल रेल पटरी भेज रहा है। इससे बीएसपी के साथ सेलम को आर्थिक रूप से फायदा हो रहा है। बीएसपी की जगह खाली भी हो रही है। सेलम पूरी तरह से दूसरी इकाइयों पर निर्भर है। यहां की पटरी से वहां बर्तन का उत्पादन किया जा रहा है।

Indian Railways is a major contributor to Swachh Bharat Mission and has already taken a number of steps in maintaining cleanliness through its flagship program ‘Swachh Rail Swachh Bharat’.

In continuation of such efforts, a Special Cleanliness Drive has been launched throughout Indian Railways to mark the Independence Day, 2020. This week long Cleanliness Drive is being held from 10th to 16th August, 2020.

The Salem Division of Southern Railway is also conducting this cleanliness drive. During this drive, special focus is being given to cleanliness of railway tracks. Cleanliness of station offices, railway colonies, work sites, etc. is also being ensured. Particular attention is being given to collection of plastic waste along with other wastes.

In Salem Division, special cleanliness activities are being organized at major railway stations namely Salem, Erode, Tiruppur, Coimbatore, Mettupalayam and Karur. Other railway stations in the division also, even relatively smaller stations, have taken up this cleanliness drive earnestly. The railway stations in the hilly terrain of Mettupalayam – Udhagamandalam section – the Nilgiri Mountain Railway – are also undertaking special cleanliness activities. Railway officials and staff are actively involved in this cleanliness drive.

As a result of this special cleanliness drive, railway stations, railway tracks, work sites and other railway premises are sporting a cleaner look.

But, this cleanliness can continue to be maintained only with sustained efforts. Apart from such efforts by railways, the passengers, public and other stakeholders should extend their active cooperation in maintaining cleanliness at railway stations, tracks and other railway premises.

The Salem Division of Southern Railway appeals to rail users and the general public to join hands with the railways in this noble cause of maintaining high standards of cleanliness at railway stations and in trains.
