Southern Railway officials led by commissioner of railway safety (CRS) Abhai Kumar Rai carried out a statutory safety inspection on the 43km-long newly-electrified railway section between Podanur and Pollachi Junction on Monday, The commissioner checked electrical, engineering and signalling works on the section. A high-speed trial run, with a special train formation, was held from Pollachi to Podanur railway station. The special train was hauled by an electric locomotive. An observation car with modern equipment, to observe and record various aspects of the electrification works, was part of the special train formation. While railway had allocated Rs 159 crore for the Dindigul - Pollachi – Palakkad electrification work, Rs 31 crore was spent on Podanur section.
Since the section falls between Salem and
Palakkad railway divisions, divisional railway managers and officials from both the division were present during the trial run, besides senior officials from Chennai.
The train formation, attached to an electric loco, left Pollachi at 3pm and arrived in Podanur 40 minutes later.
The section was energised on September 1 and a few trial runs were carried by the divisional staff before it was presented for inspection. “The CRS will submit a report and recommendations on Monday. If everything goes well, train service will be started in the section soon. In case he finds any deviation or room for correction, it will be corrected, and CRS will make another inspection after the corrective measures are taken,” said a senior official.

Unless Podanur to Madurai comes under Madurai division, no useful trains can be expected in this route. Each division will fight and public will travel by buses.

Podanur Pollachi 45 kms line falls in 3 divisions of SR (Podanur in Salem divn, Kinathukadavu to Pollachi in PGT Divn and beyond Pollachi in Madurai divn). So, one cannot expect any good train in CBE MDU line.

Earlier MG lines had more trains than today. Morning Madurai ICE and passenger from CBE and PGT. Evening/ night, we had PGT RMM passenger and CBE RMM express. There were connecting trains to PGT/CBE trains from CBE/ PGT for a seamless travel at Pollachi. Now hardly any train!!

Amid the coronavirus pandemic, a Southern Railway Signal & Telecommunication engineer has developed a device to remind people to maintain at least a three metre distance from each other.
The device can fit into a pocket or a small purse, can be attached with ID cards and can also be used along with a wristwatch. It weighs around 30 grams and uses radio frequency to detect the presence of human beings if they are wearing the same device.
"It is designed with special consideration to the safety of on-duty railway employees," said R
Dinesh IRSSE, Senior Divisional Signal and Telecommunication Engineer, Southern Railway, Trivandrum Division, who coordinated the development of the device by his Junior Engineer, R Nidheej.
"If two or more people wearing Social Distancing Ensuring Device happen to come within a distance of 2-3 metres, it would warn them with an alarm sound. It would continue to produce the alarm sound until they keep a range above 3 meters between them. Thus, the device will help us in ensuring social distancing," he explained.

While social distancing norms are one of the most essential methods to control the pandemic, it is often forgotten in daily life, the official said, emphasising on the need for such a device.
The device can be recharged with the help of a charger. Once it is charged, it will be active for more than twelve hours.
"We have developed a prototype and it has been tested successfully. We are also ready to transfer the technology to other zonal railways or railways workshops for making it on a large scale," Dinesh said.
The device is the latest innovation from Nidheej, who has also developed a robot, RailMitra, which has the ability to distribute essentials like medicines, food and water to Covid-19 patients and will collect used plates, bottles, masks, from them to avoid spread of the disease among caregivers.
RailMitra can also be used for disinfecting floors with the help of UV lights and by using its targeted spraying system. It is also provided with an IP camera through which communication can be established remotely with a patient. The technology has been transferred to S&T Workshop at Podanur and they are making it for Railway Hospitals.
Nidheej also developed a sanitiser dispenser which uses ultrasound sensors and microcontrollers to dispense sanitiser automatically for 0.75 second when someone places his or her hands under it.
This sanitiser dispensing device can be recharged with the help of a mobile phone charger. Once it is charged, it will be active for more than one week.
Also Signal & Telecommunication Department of Trivandrum Division has developed a contactless body temperature measurement device which can be used for measuring body temperature without making any physical contact.

COIMBATORE: The Salem division of the Southern Railway has electrified more than 80% of its railway tracks and is likely to complete electrification of the entire stretch of tracks well within the 2021-2022 deadline fixed by the central government.
According to railway officials, only two stretches remain to be electrified and the work on the same would be taken up this year. Electrification of railway tracks is expected to reduce the railways’ dependence on diesel, reduce running time of trains and allow easier operation of trains.
Southern railway officials said they
had electrified 673km of the total 857.96km railway tracks as on December last year. “The Erode-Karur-Trichy stretch and the Salem-Karur-Dindigul stretch, which together extend to around 300km, were the latest to be electrified at a cost of Rs300 crore. We completed the work by December 2018, while the deadline falls on mid-2019. The Coimbatore-Mettupalayam and the Coimbatore-Erode stretches were electrified much earlier,” said a railway official, who didn’t want to be named.
The 138.2km-Salem-Vridhachalam stretch and the 18km-Podanur-Kinathukidavu stretch are the only ones to be electrified now. “We have been instructed to maintain the current momentum of work. Work on these two stretches is expected to start by 2019-end and will be completed latest by 2021-end. We don’t have plans to electrify the Nilgiri Mountain Rail stretch that comes around 45km,” the official said.
The central government had earlier approved a plan to completely electrify all the tracks in the Salem division by 2021-2022 financial year. “Our government’s policy is to electrify tracks at a speed of 6,200km per year,” the official said.
Officials said the selection of right contractors, who could supply more manpower and materials, has helped them complete the work ahead of the deadline. “We made our contractors utilize more manpower, machinery and materials so they could finish the work fast. We also coordinated well with the railway operations departments, which is critical to completing track works. Usually, getting the track free is a task, but we managed to do it.”
They said the electrification of tracks would mainly reduce their dependence on diesel, which the country imports. It would also reduce running time of trains as electric engines would work more efficiently and faster. “The chances of being able to introduce MEMU or suburban trains on the same track increases,” the official said.

The Podanur Train Users Association (PTUA) on Monday approached the District Collector seeking his intervention to allow all the trains that pass through Podanur railway station to stop there. The association wanted Podanur station to be announced as the second railway terminal station of Coimbatore Junction.
The association submitted a petition to District Collector based on the resolutions passed at its meeting held on January 29 this year.
The petition said that establishments and offices like the Signal and Telecom Workshop, the Railway Hospital, offices of the Railway DE and AE, the Railway
quarters, the Railway school and Railway Employees Training Centre were located in Podanur. While all the trains that passed through Podanur station had a brief halt in the past, only a few trains are allowed to stop at the station now. According to PTUA, commuters in Podanur face difficulty in reaching Coimbatore railway station due to traffic congestion and other issues.
Compensation sought
Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam has sought compensation for small onion growers whose crops were damaged due to unprecedented rains in the district. The association petitioned District Collector on Monday and sought a compensation of Rs. 1 lakh per acre for the affected farmers. They said that large quantities of small onion stocked by farmers were also damaged due to rain.
Collector petitioned
Residents of Jeeva Nagar in Coimbatore petitioned the District Collector on Monday seeking allocation of land in city limits, as they were allegedly asked by the Slum Clearance Board to vacate the place. The petitioners said that they have been living in Jeeva Nagar since 1979 and they did not want to be evicted from the place.
