The century old Heritage Steam Locomotive PL-692 placed at BNR Hotel at Puri has been repaired and maintained by East Coast Railway, recently.
The saline air in and around Puri, had rusted the Engine completely. The roof of the engine has withered away. The boiler room is corroded. Hon’ble Minister of Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw had received representations from different sections of society to maintain and upkeep of the locomotive. Hon’ble Minister had directed to repair and maintain the Locomotive as a part of preservation of Heritage Item.
Indian Railways Catering & Tourism Corporation
(IRCTC) has taken over the management of the BNR Hotel. As IRCTC lacked in resources and technical expertise in maintenance of locomotive, it requested East Coast Railway for its upkeep and maintenance and the expenditure would be borne by them.
On request from the Hotel Management and IRCTC, East Coast Railway has taken steps to repair the necessary parts of the Heritage Steam Loco. Welding of different plates and putting a brand new livery has beautified the old engine.
The century-old railway locomotive was imported by Maharaja of Paralakhemundi. It was run by Parlakimedi Light Railway (PLR). The Paralakhemundi Engine known as “PL Class” was built by Kerr, Stuart and Company of England in 1904. Weight of the engine ‘PL-692’ is 20 tonnes. This locomotive was running on narrow gauge of PLR in the Naupada-Gunupur Railway Section.

Long standing demand of Paralakhemundi-Gunupur-Theruvalli railway track was ignored yet again in the recent Railway Budget.
The people of the undivided Koraput and Paralakhemundi have been demanding the track completion since a long time. Even the MP Koraput met with the Railway Minister to streamline the demand earlier. On railway budget proposal, Jeypore-Malkangiri (135km) was sanctioned Rs 28 crore, Jeypore-Nabarangpur(38 km) Rs 15 crore, double track for Jagdalpur-Koraput(110km) Rs 85 crore and Rs 1 lakh was sanctioned for the Koraput-Singipur tract. This is indeed discrimination for south Odisha people to restore Paralakhemundi to Rayagada on railway map, the intellectual mass opined. Former bureaucrat Purnachandra Mahapatra expressed anguish over such shortfall in budgetary allocation which is a histrical blunder by the Government of
India to defame Maharaja KC Gajapati, founder of new Odisha. More so being backward region, employment could have been generated from the areas of Gajapati and Rayagada district with completion of the project, he added.

To facilitate hassle free
traffic management in the Gunupur-Naupada section (90.20KMs), Railway has initiated several safety related modernisation work including Electronic Interlocking System at Parlakhemundi Railway Station. The Electronic Interlocking system commissioned with effect from 10th January, 2018.
As this Station was earlier having single line, there was facility for one train only system and was giving problems to Train management resulting in inconvenience to passengers. Now this Block Station, after safety related modernisation work, will facilitate movement of two trains and lesser waiting time for passengers.
04 pairs of Trains are plying in single line Railway section between Naupada & Gunupur. These are 18117/18118 Rourkela-Gunupur-Rourkela Rajyarani Express, 58417/58418 Puri-Gunupur-Puri Passenger, 58427/58428 Palasa-Gunupur-Palasa passenger and 58506/58505 Visakhapatnam-Gunupur-Visakhapatnam passenger. As the timings of Rourkela-Puri-Rourkela Rajyaran Express and Visakhapatnam-Gunupur-Visakhapatnam having a small gap, it was difficult to pass the train in single line section. on commissioning of the 2nd line at Paralakhemundi, both the trains will run as per their scheduled timings.
Parlakhemundi Station has now become two line Station with advanced Electronic Interlocking system. The station is controlling one Level Crossing gate. Two Diesel Generators were also provided as stand by for local power supply. Integrated power supply installed to avoid blanking of Signals. The total cost of this project was Rs 2 Crores.
Further, Rs 65 lakhs invested for placing Permanent way Track material for modernizing the section. Rs 5 lakhs was invested for the civil works for renovation of station building and drainage management.
Notably, for the Gunupur–Naupada section, two pairs of passenger trains commenced service in 2011 & 2012. In 2017, Rajya Rani express connecting Gunupur to Bhubaneswar and Rourkela was introduced, which also provides connectivity to the main line trains for travel towards important stations on the Palasa–Howrah and Palasa-Chennai directions for faster travel.
BACKGROUND: In the erstwhile British regime East Coast Railway came into existence in 1893 with the construction of the Cuttack-Khurda Road-Puri line and its subsequent link up to Vijayawada by 1896. When East Coast Railway brought the rail line to Naupada in 1894, the Raja of Parlakhemundi proposed the construction of Parlakhemundi Light Railway line from Naupada to his capital Parlakhemundi which was only 40 kilometres away. With the sanction of Government in 1898, the Narrow Gauge rail line work commenced. The cost at that time was Rs. 7 lakhs and the line was opened to traffic in 1900 A.D. Despite losses in this line initially, by 1910, it started making marginal profits and after 1924-25, the profits increased. Later due to no proper road connectivity, it was decided to extend the line from Parlakhemundi to Gunupur for running narrow gauge goods trains also. In two phases, the stretch between Parlakhemundi–Gunupur (50 kilometres) was completed in 1929-31. Gradually running of goods trains became financially unviable and later only two pairs of passenger trains ran between Naupada–Gunupur with an average of running time of 5-hours.
Under the ‘Project Unigauge’, the Government sanctioned conversion of this line to Broad Gauge. The gauge conversion was done in 2011.

Gunupur should also be made a full fledged Railway station.Naupada Gunupur Railway line should be extended up to Rayagada or Therubali. That will reduce the distance between BHUBANESWAR and Rayagada.
