Chennai: Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu has written to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa seeking the state government's involvement in working jointly with railways to improve infrastructure and bring in more development.
“I look forward to her support on the same," Prabhu said. Neighboring states of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka have agreed to join hands with railways for joint ventures for developing railways in their states,” he said.
“Indian Railways is seeing development and investment like it has never seen before,” Prabhu said while addressing audience at Chennai Central. “We have
decided to increase the investment worth over Rs 8 lakh crores in the next four years to make railways more people friendly and modernised.”
“We have increased fund allocation for Tamil Nadu to Rs 2,718 crores this year. If a programme like Talgo is successful for Delhi and Mumbai, Chennai can also be considered for high-speed rail connectivity,” he added. Prabhu said he needed the state's support in commencing work on doubling lines between Madurai, Kanyakumari and Trivandrum.
He said that he looks forward to develop Royapuram railway station as a terminal in the city. “Along with the state government, we can develop a railway station to be better than any airport. I request the state government to provide us land for this project.”
On Sunday, the minister also inaugurated the fourth line between Tiruvalangadu and Tiruvallur, and the doubling of 25-km line between Ariyalur and Mathur.
“It is necessary to increase revenue but also to reduce costs. Electrification of lines plays a major role as one of the major goals of railways is to bring down fuel costs,” he said.

The railway authorities have ordered an inquiry into an incident wherein a loco pilot of the Kanyakumari – Chennai Express overshot the red signal at the starter point at Mathur railway station and entered the non-electrified track leading to detention of train and few others in the early hours of Wednesday. Power supply to the electric locomotive too got cut
Loco pilot Edwin Sahayaraj and Assistant Loco Pilot Sivaraj have been placed under suspension.
Sources said the Kanyakumari-Chennai Express (train No. 12634) was regulated at Road No. 3 at Mathur railway station for
crossing of the Chennai – Mangalore Express (train No. 16859) at around 2.30 a.m. without any delay. A relief locomotive from Sendurai was brought to the spot and pulled the formation of the Kanyakumari Express from the sand hump. The train was hauled using a diesel locomotive up to Chennai. The train suffered detention for over two hours due to the incident.
Four other trains also suffered detention en-route for over two hours.
Sources said the Loco Pilot and Assistant Loco Pilot were sent for medical examination to Vriddhachalam. A detailed inquiry would be conducted by the authorities concerned in this regard.

Between Ariyalur and Mathur; double line between Villupuram and Tiruvennainallur to be ready in a month or two
The Railway Minister Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu will dedicate the second line between Ariyalur and Mathur, a 25-km electrified stretch on the 273 kilometre-long Villupuram-Tiruchi-Dindigul section where track doubling work was under way, to nation through video conferencing from Chennai on July 24.
Divisional railway officers from Tiruchi are expected to be at Ariyalur station on that day.
Villupuram-Dindigul doubling project is being executed by the Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) on different stretches simultaneously. The first portion to be commissioned a few years ago under the project was the stretch from Valadi to Ariyalur (50 km). Thereafter, the double line in the portion from Vriddhachalam to Tiruvennainallur was thrown open to traffic after obtaining safety clearance from the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS). Later, the CRS inspected the line from Ariyalur to Mathur falling in the Villupuram – Tiruchi chord line section in March.
The remaining portions where doubling works were on were Villupuram - Tiruvennainallur; Vriddhachalam – Mathur and Valadi to Tiruchi. RVNL authorities say the double line works were in the advanced stage between Villupuram and Tiruvennainallur.
Officials exude hope that the double line between Villupuram and Tiruvennainallur would be ready in a month or two before inviting the CRS for inspection. Doubling works were proceeding swiftly between Valadi and Tiruchi and from Vriddhachalam to Mathur, say the authorities adding that the works would be completed before the end of the current fiscal.
There were some issues pertaining to land acquisition in the portion from Manapparai to Tamaraipadi, the sources said. The RVNL is executing the Villupuram – Dindigul doubling project at an estimated cost of Rs. 1,200 crore.
Laying of a double line would ease congestion in the chord line section especially during night when movement of train services reaches its peak and eventually lead to reduction in travel time, say officials.
