Reviving the fading dream of a bullet train on the Chennai-Bengaluru-Mysuru route, the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRL) has called two separate tenders for identifying preliminary route and final alignment design for the project, along with five other corridors across the country with a total length of 8,218 km.
The development comes days after the union government allotted Rs 5,600 crore for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor sanctioned two years ago. The project is facing several hurdles, especially in land acquisition.
Introducing the project to the bidders, NHSRL said it would be ushering India

into the club of about 15 countries in the world using high-speed rail (HSR) system.
The six corridors identified are: Delhi-Varanasi (865 km), Delhi-Ahmedabad (886 km), Delhi-Amritsar (459 km), Mumbai-Nashik-Nagpur (753 km), Mumbai-Pune-Hyderabad 711 km and Chennai-Bengaluru-Mysuru (435 km).
The work on preliminary route alignment, likely to be awarded by June, has a deadline of six months. The work on designing final alignment, including LiDAR aerial survey and related works, will have to be completed in 470 days after awarding of the contract.

If you have seen Chennai Beach-Chennai Egmore route, you would understand that a lot of formalities would be needed to construct another line in this section, as there is no other space! Compared to ED-KRR route which would consist of fields mostly.

Work on revamping the overbridge near Katpadi railway station on the Arakkonam-Jolarpet section has commenced, and is estimated to cost ₹2 crore.
It would take at least four months to complete the project, depending on the traffic allowed on the bridge during the time of construction.
Notice boards have been displayed on both sides of the site cautioning motorists and pedestrians using the Vellore-Chittoor Road.

police’s help had been sought to regulate traffic as it was unsafe for motorists as well as workers, said railway sources. If needed, it would be made a one-way till the work was completed, he said.
Vellore MP D.M. Kathir Anand and P. Mahesh, divisional railway manager of the Southern Railway, Chennai, had announced the work here on September 19. The existing bridge near Katpadi Junction comprises two spans of 41.09 m each (Bowstring Arch type) built in 1995-96.
The bridge construction won the ‘S.B. Joshi and P.V. Raj Memorial and L&T Most Outstanding Bridge National Awards National Award’ constituted by Indian Institute of Bridge Engineers in 1997.
Due to heavy traffic, vibration was noticed during the passage of heavy vehicles, especially container trucks.
After conducting a load test, it was decided to renovate the bridge by adopting carbon-fibre technology.
According to railway engineering department sources, carbon-fibre is lightweight but several times stronger than steel and twice as stiff. It was used to strengthen the building material.
There were two primary ways to make carbon-fibre, but polyacrylonitrile (PAN) was the most common precursor for carbon-fibre, which was being used in the project.
The road, which connects Vellore and Chittoor in Andhra Pradesh, formed a key link for freight movement between the two States. Because of wear and tear, the bridge developed cracks at many places. The parapet on both sides was in danger of collapsing.
Railway sources said that following several complaints from commuters and from politicians, railway authorities appointed a private agency in June to conduct a dynamic load test.
After conducting a vibration study for assessing the safety of the bridge, a report submitted to the railway authorities suggested a complete change in the strengthening mechanism of the bridge. Based on the report and a study by experts from the Southern Railway, it was decided to renovate the bridge.

The construction of road over bridge connecting Ariyur and Sripuram, started in 2016, still under construction is set for inauguration soon.
The construction of a road bridge across the Katpadi-Vellore-Tiruvannamalai railway line is moving at a slower pace than expected.
Residents of Ariyur demanded the construction of the bridge, which is estimated to cost ₹22.93 crore
The work on the bridge, which

started in July 2016, went on till July 2018 following a delay in putting up the central span across the tracks though the approaches on both sides were completed by the State highways department.
Due to delay in work, local residents and motorists are forced to spend more on fuel as they have to take a 6-km detour via Pennatthur or a 7-km circuitous route via Abdullapuram.
After several protests by residents over the delay, Anaicut MLA A.P. Nandakumar intervened to convince the railway officials to have a mud road underneath the bridge under construction, But it is usable only by two-wheelers.
A regular commuter from Thorapadi, V. Harikrishnan said devotees have been put to a lot of hardship due to the detour. He said that the work restarted after elections but still the officials do not know when the work will end. “Till then we have to put up with the dust,” he added. The major portion of the bridge was completed by Highways department. The railways is yet to complete the work on the centre portion of the bridge.
“We have been in constant touch with railway officials with regard to their portion of work, which may be completed in the next few days. Once completed, traffic would be allowed on the bridge,” said a Highways department official.
Mr. Nandakumar said that he has been following up the work details both with the State Highways and the Railways. He urged then to complete the work expeditiously. He reminded that a similar bridge work near Kasba connecting Kanar Road with Anna Salai is in a limbo.

South India’s first prestigious Shatabdi Express running between Chennai and Mysuru via Bengaluru, the most preferred train for morning travellers from the capital of Tamil Nadu to the capital of Karnataka, turns 25 on Saturday.
The train was launched on May 11, 1994, and is still the most sought-after train for travellers, especially those who go to Bengaluru from Chennai and return home the same night. Though there have been no advancements in terms of speed for the train, which still takes 7 hours to reach Mysuru and four and a half hours to Bengaluru from Chennai, passengers’ patronage has been overwhelming.
From

10 coaches in 1994, the train now boasts of 16 coaches, including one Anubhuti and one Executive Class, and has added another stop at Katpadi from 2016. The train is preferred by professionals who shuttle between the two cities since the time taken by it is just one hour less than the total time drill involved in taking a flight from Chennai and reaching Bengaluru from the airport.
As the train celebrates its 25th birthday, regular travellers want technological advancements, better coaches, increase of train’s speed and an additional stoppage either at KR Puram or at Baiyappanahalli. Though trains can run at a speed of 110 km per hour Chennai and Bengaluru, Shatabdi Express runs at an average speed of 72 km per hour.
“Bengaluru has grown leaps and bounds in the past 25 years and not to have an additional stop in Bengaluru does not make any sense. The train should stop at Baiyappanahalli or KR Puram to facilitate those travelling to Whitefield and Manyata Tech Park,” Prabhu Krishnamurthy, a frequent traveller on the train for the last 15 years, told DH.
A stop at Baiyappanahalli would help several travellers save time as they can hop-on to a Metro train to reach their final destination, Krishnamurthy said.
For a prestigious train like the Chennai-Mysuru Shatabdi Express, the coaches should be more advanced and should boast of facilities like Wi-Fi. “Five hours is too long for such a train that too in 2019, when trains in India are run at a speed of 160 km per hour,” he said.
Another regular on the train, K Vasudevan, echoes Krishnamurthy and wants the train coaches to be kept cleaner and Railways to ensure that catering staff posted on the train know either the local language or English.
“Shatabdi is no more the preferred train for me. It is not worth it to travel all the way to KSR Bengaluru station and come back to Whitefield by road. Railways should tweak its policies to suit the growing demands of the people,” Vasudevan said.

I still remember the days when it was running with the ICF Shatabdi coaches with a matching Blue-white livery WAP1 from AJJ shed. It was always well patronized for it's speed and punctuality.
The period before it got the stop at KPD was particularly good, with the Down train always doing the MAS-SBC run in a little over 4:30 hours. Many times it used to pass through KJM running 15-20 minutes before time.
Personally, I prefer the silver-blue livery of the LHB coaches used for this rake over the traditional Blue livery

I'm not sure of MYS-SBC section speed is upgraded to 110 yet..perhaps that's the reason it usually doesn't do above 100 in this stretch..
