MADURAI: Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), which has taken up the doubling and electrification work of the Madurai-Tuticorin (through Vanchi Maniyachi) and Vanchi Maniyachi-Nagercoil sections, said that the first phase of 44 km is likely to be completed before the end of 2019. It includes 30 km from Kadambur to Thattaparai in Tuticorin district and 14 km from Vanchi Maniyachi to Gangaikondan in Tirunelveli district.Despite the constraints in getting soil from waterbodies for the formation works and acquisition of land for the major stretch, officials expressed confidence that the entire 260.8 km – in the two stretches – will be completed in four phases by October 2021. The 158.8-km Madurai-Tuticorin doubling work carried out at Rs 1,182 crore is expected to be completed by July 2021.The remaining 102 km from Vanchi Maniyachi to Nagercoil to be laid at Rs 1,004 crore is expected to be finished by October 2021, a senior...
RVNL official told TOI. Work on these two major sections, at total cost of Rs 2,186 crore, commenced in July 2018. “Priority was to complete the Madurai-Virudhunagar stretch. But it is taking place at a very slow pace due to the constraints in getting soil from waterbodies,” he said.He said that around 14 lakh to 15 lakh cubic meter soil is needed for formation works for the tracks – before blue metal, sleepers and tracks are laid – for the entire stretch. “This has to be collected from nearby waterbodies. Like the sand mafia, there is a lot of interference in collecting soil from waterbodies. They are backed by political parties and it is not easy to bypass them even for the government project,” he said.Officials said that there are interferences at the district-level and it narrows down to the local-level. The issue has been discussed with top railway officials even during their recent review on the progress of the project. Work is in progress at a faster pace from Kadambur to Thattaparai and Vanchi Maniyachi to Gangaikondan, said Kanagaraj a sub-contractor in that stretch.Railway officials said that completion of the 44-km stretch in and around Vanchi Maniyachi will be instrumental in reducing the delay of express trains to the southern districts during nights that are now forced to wait for a long time at stations to give way for other passing trains on the single line. “In the long run it will also facilitate operation of more trains,” an official said and added that the next focus is completing the Madurai-Virudhunagar stretch by July 2020.But for the extension of the existing subways and bridges parallel to the existing ones across major waterbodies, no new railway overbridges and underpasses have been planned as part of the doubling project. “The Madurai-Tuticorin stretch has 19 major overbridges, of which 12 has been completed. There are 20 major bridges on the Vanchi Maniyachi-Nagercoil stretch, of which two has been completed,” an official said.Construction of 205 minor bridges and 17 station buildings on the Madurai-Tuticorin and 325 minor bridges and 12 station buildings on the Vanchi Maniyachi-Nagercoil stretch are among the other major construction works to be carried out as part of the project. As many as five new stations are included on the Madurai-Tuticorin stretch at Nalli, Kadambur, Thattaparai, Vanchi Maniyachi and Tuti Melur.
