I would like to ask a question regarding the braking of EMD locomotives or in general any diesel electric locomotive. Whenever a train is coming to a halt the loco usually comes down from the higher notches down to the 2nd and then finally the 1st notch.
But many times i have seen locos are coming to halt in Notch 4 itself. Why do the LPs do this ?

Although i am not Technical but try. Notch down reduce energy loss even when Loco can be Neutral at any Notch when braking!!
Roadside Yellow/Red Signals need quick acceleration (past Clearance) & need Loco Air Reservoir replenish quickly & Feed (FP) Pressure lost in Braking (BP). High Notch balances Reservoir Air Pressure while regenerative braking systems minimize energy loss!!
We brake/release (Car) till reach speed for safe final braking at destination. LP can brake/release repeatedly by replenishing Reservoir (need high Notch) and usually Loco is fully Notched Down at Safe Stop Distance at
