"why Just till Poona" Well the Actual Query was .As we know Bangalore Poona Mail is running since early 1900's. it got Extended to Nanjangud in 1907 . But Why Mail Ran Only Till Poona but Not Bombay as Bombay Bangalore Mail Instead from 1900's Itself.

And When Bombay Poona Line Got Commissioned and if the line existed in 1900's itself why Poona mail Wasn't Extended To Bombay? Was it Deliberate or Due to Some Technical Constraints

(even though I can understand Bangalore was not that big and up untill early 19th century Poona holded More significance than Bombay). Now that's for early 1900's to 1940's..

Now straight to 1950's in this timeline Bombay is more Significant than Poona. And There are 2 or Possibly 3 Trains Between Bangalore and Poona and There are Connecting Trains To Bombay from Poona for SBC Pax..

In this timeline of 50's why these Bangalore poona trains Were not Extended to Bombay was it due to gauge conversion of Bombay Poona section or any other reason

As you know, the Bangalore-Pune route was on MG and the Pune-Bombay route was on BG. So, an end-to-end train between Bombay and Bangalore via Pune and Hubli was not possible before 1995.

If you mean, why not they have a BG train on the Pune-Bombay section that acted as the BG portion of a combined BG-MG mail service from Bangalore, then it was because the amount of traffic was far lesser in those days and the British method of operations was also quite different. trains to Bombay from Pune, and 1st class passengers could book a combined ticket from Bombay to Bangalore.

Like I said, until 1983, there was no BG route from Bangalore to Bombay. The only route was via JTJ-RU-GTL-Wadi. In 1983, the SBC-GTL section was converted to BG and for the first time in history, it was possible to run a direct train between the 2 cities. In 1995, the SBC-Miraj section was also converted to BG, which gave another direct route between the 2 cities.


Also, Bombay was already more important than Pune by the time railways started in India in 1853. It was the Brits' main centre on the west coast. In fact, Bombay, Madras, Calcutta and Lahore were by far, the largest and most prominent cities in the British territory between 1850 and 1947. All the other cities, except Delhi, were far, far behind these 4 cities in terms of importance.

Have always been following your blogs for ir history. You always mentioned untill 1971 there were 2 sbc Poona trains. But found a third one. It's your Karnataka exp today's Rani chennamma like you mentioned..
3 trains existed in 1966 with third one running with train no 207/208.
Also found the footage of infamous accident of poona exp that you had mentioned in some old blog. If you didn't had mentioned about that accident I would have went looking for it .thank you

Thank you for the correction. Yes, there were 3 trains. The 1961 TT had only two trains and I jumbled it up with 1971, when the GC was done.

The 207/208 was initially named 'Deccan express', later as 'Karnataka express' and then as 'Kittur express', before being renamed as 'Rani Chennamma express' after GC.

203/204 didn't have any particular name. It was replaced with a faster train with the same number, named as 'Mahalakshmi express' in 1977. It continued with the same name until it was stopped during GC. It was also diverted to Mangalore in the late 80's. After GC, a new Bangalore-Bombay train was started roughly with the same schedule, and was later renamed 'Chalukya express.

Never Knew the third train Ever existed came across it very recently while going through a rail crash investigation report. The Deccan Express had a head-on collision on Yalvig Pf. It seems the crash was pretty bad. The ministries rail investigation report just says heavy loss of life hiding the actual toll
