Great Great Great Great Great Great:write-up. Great:Playing with saloon and alcos 😂 Great Great Great Great Great Great Great Great Great Great Great
DADN-KYQ Express, NR/LKO ka Aatank.

So, for some urgent work, I had to return home to Varanasi from Lucknow. The original plan was to return via Ekatmata Express, but due to some unforeseen circumstances with my Thar, I had to return back from midway to the station.

So,
...

another hour, another plan. The 19305, DADN-KYQ Express suited me the best, so I booked the tickets in current availability. Hopped on an Uber and that was the fastest commute in my entire journey, reached Charbagh from Ekana in just over 20 minutes.

The train was on time till Kanpur, and as soon as it entered NR, it instantly got late. Still, I hoped the delay would not exceed 45 minutes. But the great NR/LKO. They were playing with a GM saloon and two ALCos on the PF-2 where the train was supposed to be received.

Shaheed Express was taken on the vacant PF-3 first, and when the ALCos finally got done with the parking simulator, Bagh Express was received on PF-2. And while it was a pleasant surprise to see coach display indicators on LKO, they were working with a mind of their own. Data of my still nowhere to be seen train was displayed while Bagh was on PF-2. And that of Shaheed started being displayed after it's departure.

Finally, after a delay of 1.5 hours, the train arrived on PF-3 and departed after accumulating a few more minutes of delay. But here comes something I hadn't expected from NR/LKO even in my dreams. The train reached SLN in around 1hr 20min, averaging more than 100kmph. And covered SLN-JOP in around 50 minutes, again an average of 100kmph. Now I was sure, we'd reach Varanasi before 11:30.

And then started typical NR behavior. The train was halted at every station to let the freights gain some progress, even though we were still late, officially. And finally the train was halted at Babatpur because operational block was taken. A totally avoidable situation, had they run the train on the schedule it was running.

The train halted there for almost an hour. Another block was scheduled if the previous one didn't work (they were welding the tracks), and exactly the same thing happened. But somehow we were allowed to proceed, supposedly because the train was full of people appearing for some exam, and they got agitated. The train was halted yet again at Shivpur and Varanasi outers.

At this point I was so annoyed, I deboarded and started walking towards the station. I boarded back when the train started crawling towards the station. Finally it reached BSB around 2 hours late. ½ hour of gained delay, even with a track-burning run, and a heavy slack in last 50km.

You can trust a wolf to guard the sheep, but can't trust NR to reach somewhere on time. Attached here are some pictures I took while waiting for my train. Well, except for the train I was traveling in.

P.S. Farakka is still displayed as MLDT-NDLS at BSB. And while the train boards are still printed and handwritten, CDO/KIR has taken extra steps to paint ER again wherever it had been peeled off. They're surely reading some blogs here.

Kumud.

Are you a school going child? If not, stop behaving like one.

Not that NCR/PRYJ is any good, but it's a thousand times better than NR/LKO. For sure, there are operational constraints, but NR slept until it became problematic. And still, they haven't done anything significant to alleviate the issue.

LKO

division itself is a havoc. It's a miracle that it's still functioning. PRYJ mainline is way over saturated, even with the DFC functioning. Almost all the trains are SF with minimal slacks and aggressive TTs. Have you seen the slack before LKO. For some trains, that's enough to make a round-trip to LKO.

Even with heavy slacks and almost zero loco reversals, LKO manages to delay trains massively. Lucknow as a city is better, no doubt. But as a station or even a division, it'd be better if you stop comparing it to anything else, well, maybe except for the MB division. That's far worse.

Everything you mentioned here is correct to some extent.
I'd just like tell you that I've observed LKO since many years. Constant improvements are being done in comparison to yester years but since railways in Lucknow lacks adequate political focus which is requisitely needed to take some giant steps towards major yard remodeling, things don't appear to improve to people outside.
Problems like lack of quadruple entry/exit lines, old age interlockings, ample of unnecessary points and crossings, lack of PFs, freight yard, and to some extent some laggy controlling of trains too. You
...

might be knowing that Moradabad Div controls the train just after Alamnagar towards MB. This needs to be addressed. I think LKO Div should control trains somewhere near to Shahjahanpur and if not upto Hardoi to the least.
To everybody's knowing I would like to tell that improvements are visible although they are slow. Now lately there is two way signalling from LKO to penultimate halts like MKG, AMG, UTR. Quadruple entry/exit lines are under construction from Dilkusha Cabin to LKO. 3rd/4th line construction is at full pace from Barabanki to Malhaur. RRI building construction is complete since years. PFs lengths are increased to 600m except I suppose PF4/5. There's a huge VB Maintenance Depot under construction (although it has nothing to do with traffic management). There are media news' about a PF with provision of cabway under LKO NR. In very near future, I suppose there could be major diverisons in traffic from LKO to other bypasses around LKO whether it be Utraitia-Transport Nagar-Alamnagar or Aishbagh-Manaknagar. Utraitia is under development in AmritBharat Scheme. Alamnagar is now a future capable satellite station. Everytime we visit LKO, we see paralles departures and arrivals which were rare in LKO. Trains move with good speed in yard while departing or arriving. Signs are ominous.

Concluding, LKO can't be compared to any other city like PRYJ or BSB. Its unfair too. Lately Varanasi is under terrific political focus, PRYJ handles IRs major trunk route but LKO neither has any trunk route passing through nor does it has that dynamic political representation like MP from Godda Mr. Dubey. Also NR had the hefty task of developing Ayodhya under it's belt. A slight miscue and you could see top official being transferred from LKO just after PM visited AY. There are too many things going around im LKO NR which might be the reason of slow progress in LKO Yard. Just imagine AY developed like leaps and bounds while LKO remained as it is. Zonal warfares are at top notch. NER NR are never seen cooperative with each other.
Although we are hopeful of a better LKO particularly in very near future with small improvements gearing up for that major yard remodeling.
Glad you wrote something about the issues LKO has and faces. We'll all see LKO evolving together 😊

While I agree to most points, but talking about LKO/NR, I'm referring to the zone in its entirety, not the station itself.

NR definitely works to address the issues, but only after it's too late to swiftly handle the situation. It's not about political will, BSB is the main station of PM's constituency. And they still haven't figured out how to manage the traffic smoothly, even after the yard remodeling. They've created more issues than they've addressed.
...

I've been reading about the 'signature bridge' parallel to Malviya bridge and Vyasnagar quadrupling almost daily in the newspapers, for years now. And still, they haven't managed to even prepare a DPR. And the tracks still seem like they're from the steam era.

Dilkusha and Utraitia usually get long halts due to huge slacks. Which I'm pretty much sure can be managed given the track-burning run I witnessed. The main issue lies at Manak Nagar and Malhaur due to the crossing over with NER. But NR's lackluster attitude is the main issue. It's like they don't even want to work until things get out of hand.

Also, I agree that the routes until a few stations after major junctions should be in a single zone/division. Like NCR did with Anwarganj. It'll make departures seamless. But crossover stations like Manak Nagar, Chheoki, Malhaur, etc, will always remain an issue until RoRs are constructed like Tundla. Because crossovers will be slow and will occupy one way until it's complete.

Lucknow is the state capital and divisional HQ of two divisions of two different zones. It should be at par of other such places, if not better. BSB isn't doing any better. Even the trains keep getting extended. Within the same city, BSBS and BCY have progressed quite a lot from what they used to be. Ayodhya still looks like a station from the past if you deboard on the other side of the PF. Tracks still feel like the train will derail if it goes any faster. Things are improving, but a lot slower than they should have.

Coming to PRYJ, even DDU, they handle the trunk route and a lot of trains without any political representation. They're upgrading their routes, now to 160kmph, signaling and their yards constantly, even after the saturation and superfast TTs. Even the passenger amenities have come a long way at these places. While BSB/LKO/AY, they're still making plans that will suit them the most.

Thank you so much, Akash. And I want to say the same for you, it's not every time I come up to someone who actually knows the root cause of the issues and the solution to it. I appreciate it :D

I've the 'luxury' of experiencing NR, NER, NCR, and ECR straight out of home. And strangely enough, most of the times I've something important come up, I've taken the NR route. And every time, they've let me down. Every time I want to praise their controlling, they mess it up even

worse by the end. Other zones have a sense of responsibility, which NR lacks, be it trains, parcels, or RailMadad complaints. So, the stereotyping.
