This date only marks the first run of this service from/to Madras. The service was originally started as Bezwada (Vijayawada or BZA) - Delhi Janata express sometime between 1948-1952. Starting from May 15th, 1952, the train was extended to Madras as Delhi-Madras Janata express. By 1977, it's frequency had been increased...

During the late 90's, in a bid to reach out to the states not connected to the rest of the country by railways, several trains were renamed to include the names of those states (like Sikkim Mahananda, Mangala Lakshadweep etc). This train was also renamed to Andaman express at the same time.
