Meanwhile, the BMRCL has apologized for not providing information in Kannada on the banners
The Mysuru Road-Kengeri metro line recorded a ridership of about 7,500 on the first day of its commercial operations on Monday, amid confusion over the new software at the automatic fare collection gates.
As per the information shared by officials from the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), 7,476 people exited from the six stations of the new extension, taking the overall daily ridership to 1.83 lakh.

delay in recharging the smart cards and compatibility issues marked the first day of the operations.
“There were some compatibility issues that had to be rectified while recharging problems arose due to the adoption of the latest technology that supports the QR code payment mode. It may take about a week for commuters and staffers to get used to the new system,” a BMRCL source said.
BMRCL apology
Meanwhile, the BMRCL has apologized for not providing information in Kannada on the banners erected during the inauguration ceremony on Sunday.
“All signboards had information in Kannada as well as English. However, the banner on the main stage had information only in English. I received objections from the media and general public. I apologize for the error and will ensure that such errors are not repeated,” the BMRCL chief public relations officer said in a message.
While the gesture was appreciated by many citizens on social media, some noted that the BMRCL has not learnt its lessons despite several protests over the last few years.

BENGALURU: The opening up of Metro's Mysuru Road-Kengeri Line could play a crucial role in making daily commute of office goers between Mysuru and neighbouring towns and Bengaluru faster and comfortable. However, it is crucial to put in place infrastructure for easy pedestrian access between the new Metro stations and the railway stations in their vicinity.
While the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) stresses that regular commuters between Bengaluru and Mysuru and those residing enroute will benefit enormously as the road traffic on Mysuru Road can be bypassed using Metro, those expected to use them think infrastructure for it is sorely missing.

Detailing the issues when interchanging between different modes of transport, S. Yogendra, rail activist and a member of Mysuru Grahakara Parishat Users told The New Indian Express, “The Jnanabharati Metro and railway stations are connected but there are only a few trains that stop at this station. The two Metro stations of Kengeri Bus Terminal as well as Kengeri as well as Nayandahalli are not connected with their respective railway stations which are at a distance of nearly 800 metres from each other. The road to be crossed to access them is narrow, unhygienic and dangerous too.” An option that can be considered by Railways is upgrading the Jnanabharati railway station to help commuters interchange easily here, he added.
A senior railway official said that 30 pairs of trains ply between KSR and Mysuru daily. “Of them 25 pairs stop at Kengeri while two pairs of MEMU trains stop at Jananabharati railway station,” he said.
The Kengeri Bus Terminal Metro station is just 100 metres away from its Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) Kengeri TTMC bus stand which has one Karnataka State Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bay but there is no connecting bridge as of now. Anjum Parwez, BMRCL Managing Director said, “We are ready with the designs and will be putting up a Foot Over Bridge at the earliest as soon as the line becomes operational. Multi-modal integration is a priority for Metro.”
B T Prabhakar Reddy, Chief Traffic Manager (Operations), KSRTC, said, “We will be keenly watching the travel pattern as soon as the line starts. If running of more buses in the direction towards Mysuru is required, we will introduce them soon. Buses from Mysuru Road Satellite Bus Terminal towards Kengeri run with 70% occupancy and there is space to take on more commuters. We can even consider starting and terminating buses from Kengeri.
40 feeder buses
BMTC will be introducing 30 feeder buses (30-seats) and 10 regular buses along the Mysuru Road-Kengeri Line, said a senior official. “At present, the feeder routes planned are between RR Nagar and interior areas, Jnanabharati and surroundings and Kengeri towards Bidadi and two other directions from here. These will only be short distance buses. In addition, 10 regular buses will be introduced to cater to the expected traffic in the area. The detailed list will be released in a day.”

Sources in the BMRCL said they still hope to commission the line by the end of August
The Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) on Thursday completed the two-day inspection of the western extension of the Purple Line from Mysuru Road to Kengeri.
Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) officials said the CRS began the inspection around 10 am and looked into physical infrastructure, including track parametres, third rail and other arrangements.

per the plan, the CRS visited the metro stations and checked the station control room, elevators, escalators and other passenger amenities.
From platform clearings to electrical infrastructure and signalling and telecommunication systems, the team — led by CRS A K Rai — looked into the details of the project.
"Several oral instructions were given with regard to the corrections. A report, including detailed suggestions and corrections, may be given in the next one or two weeks," an official said.
Sources in the BMRCL said they still hope to commission the line by the end of August.
"All tests, including the speed test, have been concluded. If the safety goals are met, the line commissioning will happen in August without any further delay."
The extension has six stations: Nayandahalli, RR Nagar, Jnanabharathi, Pattanagere, Kengeri Bus Terminal and Kengeri.
Meanwhile, officials have set December 2022 as the deadline to complete the nearly 1.5-km stretch of the line to Challaghatta, where a station and depot will also come up.

Swab collection units were set up at various entry points such as Majestic, Yeshwanthpur, and K R Puram
Bengaluru: Anticipating possible spur in the infection rate with the influx of returnees after unlocking exercise, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) had deployed testing units in crowded areas such as bus stands, railway station and labour camps at construction sites.
While the testing units were deployed at all designated areas, the one at the Krantiveera Sangolli Rayanna (KSR) Railway station witnessed technical glitches resulting in the let go of the returnees without testing.

collection units were set up at various entry points such as Majestic, Yeshwanthpur, and K R Puram. Tests are also being conducted at Nayandahalli Checkpost, Nice Road Checkpost, and Attibele Checkpost.
Rajendra Cholan, Special Commissioner (Health) BBMP said, "Testing units have been sent to all the railway stations around Bengaluru. We are also coordinating with Deputy Commissioners of the neighbouring districts and collecting samples of those entering Bengaluru at the borders."
Dr Suresh, Health officer of Bommanahalli and in charge of testing the returnees to Bengaluru said, " We have deputed 46 swab collection teams for this purpose. Apart from these entry points, test camps have also been set up in all the major roads.”

Amid the preparations, testing at KSR Railway station ran into trouble as the BBMP personnel tried in vain to establish a connection with the centralised server for registering of testing citizens. Due to the repeated error messages, the personnel were unable to process any testing. "We are unable to feed the details of the people and generate OTP. The server is not taking any data and repeatedly showing error messages.
Due to this, we are unable to test and sitting idle without testing anybody," explained personnel while showing the tablet flashing the error alert. However, Dr Suresh claimed that testing at all the railway stations was smooth. "We have not received any complaints. But will check if there were any issues," he clarified.
According to the data made available by the BBMP, the 46 teams had collected 3,337 samples as of June 15 evening. However, the number of samples collected is set to increase even further. “Looking at the number of travellers, we are expecting the teams to collect nearly 7,000 samples every day from these points,” said another senior BBMP official. Additionally, BBMP has also asked the apartment associations, Resident Welfare Associations (RWA), PG owners, and hoteliers to alert them of any persons who have returned to Bengaluru. “Mobile testing teams will be sent to test such people,” Cholan said.

The proposed suburban rail project for Bengaluru, currently at the design stage, is likely to be integrated with at least 10 Metro stations. In the revised detailed project report (DPR), the length and number of suburban stations have been reduced to avoid overlap of the two rapid transit systems. The yet-to-be-approved DPR, prepared by the state-owned consultancy firm RITES , proposes 57 suburban railway stations covering a distance of 148 km. Besides dropping at least 24 stations from the original report, the revised DPR has also cut down the number of elevated stations from 31 to 22.“The DPR requires approval from the state and the Railway Board. It will also be submitted to the NITI Aayog. The proposal will then go before the Cabinet for funding,” said Amit Garg, who is heading the special purpose vehicle B-RIDE that will execute the suburban rail project for Bengaluru. While the process of approvals do not...

follow specific timelines as much depends on political support and administrative clearances, the DPR has set a six-year period for the construction of the project. Land acquisition alone is likely to take about two years. “Operations may not start anytime before 2026,” a senior Railways official said. Existing and proposed Metro stations at Majestic, Yeshwanthpur, Kengeri, Cantonment, Whitefield, KR Puram, Baiyappanahalli, Jnanabharathi and Nayandahalli may be integrated with suburban rail stations.Acquiring land is likely to be a major constraint. The project requires about 100 acres for the construction of additional tracks. “There are a number of private buildings at the edge of the railway boundary on Kengeri — KSR Bengaluru City, also on certain parts between KSR Bengaluru City-Cantonment corridor. At some of the places, temples are constructed either within the railway boundary or adjacent to railway boundaries on Kengeri-KSR Bengaluru City section and Hebbal-Banaswadi section corridors,” the DPR states.
