Modi is expected to laud the efforts of the health care workers
Two days before Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to interact with Goan politicians, health workers and members of the public via video conference, Congress in Goa has demanded justice from the PM over the Mahadayi issue.
Addressing a press conference in Panaji on Thursday, state Congress president Girish Chodankar also said that the Prime Minister should scrap the three road, rail and power projects along the Goa-Karnataka border, which the Congress official said were being carried out in order to

develop the state into a corridor to transport coal to Karnataka's steel mills.
"BJP leaders have compromised our mother Mahadayi and sold it to Karnataka for political purposes. The damage to Goa because of this compromise is irreversible. It will cause immeasurable hardship to Goans in the years to come. PM should give justice to Goa on this issue," Chodankar said.

The Opposition in Goa has accused successive ruling the state BJP of colluding with Karnataka and "selling the interests of the state" over the long-standing inter-state dispute over the waters of the Mahadayi river.
"We urge the Prime Minister when you interact with the people of Goa, announce that Goa will not be a coal hub and Goa will be rid of coal dust," Chodankar said, adding that the projects were not beneficial to Goa or the state's local residents in any manner.
Modi's virtual interaction has been scheduled after Chief Minister Pramod Sawant claimed that the state had achieved 102 per cent coverage of the first dose of Covid vaccination. Modi is expected to laud the efforts of the health care workers, the state's administrative machinery, local politicians and the members of the public for achieving the feat.
"Goa is being turned into a coal hub for Modi's friends in Delhi and Gujarat. Goans have no takeaway or benefit from these projects. Coal is already getting seeped into the health of Goans making them sicker," the state Congress president also said.
The three projects include rail track expansion by the South Western Railway from Castlerock railway station in Karnataka to Tinaighat railway station in Goa, the National Highway - 4 four-laning and drawing of a power line. All three projects run through the protected forest areas in both Goa and Karnataka territories which are a part of the UNESCO-endorsed Western Ghat region.
50,000 trees in and around Mollem, a village located along the Goa-Karnataka border, have been slotted for felling to make way for the three government projects, which have been cleared by the state and the central government's Ministry for Environment and Forests.
Activists, as well as opposition politicians in Goa, have been demanding a review of the three projects, claiming that they were hurriedly granted permission during the pandemic, without due diligence.
Opponents of the projects had alleged that the doubling tracking of railway tracks and expansion of the National Highway 4 would lead to increased transportation of coal imported to the Mormugao Port Trust in South Goa to steel mills in Karnataka's Bellary region.
Congress has already announced that if the party comes to power in the 2022 state assembly polls, it would scrap the three projects immediately.

South Western Railways headquartered in Karnataka on Sunday recognised swift action and life-saving work by loco pilot Ranjeet Kumar, assistant loco pilot Hashid K and guard Shailender Kumar in the early hours of Friday and handed out a cash reward of Rs 10,000. The awardees were on duty of the Train No 01134 (Mangaluru Jn - Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Mumbai). The train was derailed in the Ghat Section due to a landslide caused by heavy rains.
These officials displayed alertness, and presence of mind, noted senior officials including General Manager SWR Gajanan Mallya. He said the crew acted as ‘first responder’ at site, even before the rescue team arrived, resulting in saving the lives of passengers. With the instructions from the

headquarters, the crew managed not only to unlock some coaches which were in the risk of getting under mud piles but also utilised the rear (banking) engine to help move passengers to safety.
“On Friday, at about 6.10 AM, while driving the engine of this train from Kulem towards Castle Rock (up the Ghat), at km 39/800 near Dudhsagar-Sonaulim section, Shri Ranjeet Kumar observed that the mud was slipping ahead on the track from the side walls of the hill beside the track, due to continuous very heavy rainfall. Sensing danger, he immediately applied emergency brakes and brought the train to a stop. Due to mud and soil mixed with boulders on the track, the engine derailed along with two sets of wheels, despite the immediate braking,” Aneesh Hegde, Chief Public Relations Officer, SWR, said.
“Upon noticing emergency brakes being applied, the guard of the train Shri Shailder Kumar applied hand brakes to the Brake Van, which is situated rear most of the train and then proceeded to the engine. Parallely the Guard and Locopilot instructed the Assistant Locopilots of the leading and banking engines to place detonators at stipulated distance on the track at both rear and front, and also secured the train by tying chains to the track, placing wheel-skids, etc as per standard safety protocol,” he added.
Further, Ranjeet and Shailender noticed that from the steep indent of the hill beside the track, slush and mud were also falling on the coaches immediately rear to the front engine. “In order to ensure protection of passengers, they shifted the passengers from the first three coaches to the rear coaches, and un-coupled these coaches from the rest of the train,” the official further said.
Rail officials reiterated that the Castle Rock - Kulem Ghat section is 27 kms long and is a single line rail section passing through Western Ghats in uninhabited territory through forests. The entire Ghat section has a steep gradient and trains are pushed with engines in rear in addition to the engines in front. The stations between Castle Rock and Kulem, namely Caranzol, Dudhsagar and Sonaulim are connected only by rail with no road connectivity.

to mud and soil mixed boulders on the track, the engine got derailed along with 2 sets of wheels, despite the immediate braking. He informed the Station Master of Dudhsagar about the same, to give a message to Control Office, Hubballi.
Upon noticing the emergency brake being applied, the Guard of the train Shri Shailder Kumar applied hand brakes to the Brake Van, which is situated rearmost of the train and then proceeded to the engine. Parallelly the Guard and Locopilot instructed the Assistant Locopilots of the leading and banking engines to place detonators at stipulated distance on the track at both rear & front, and also secured the train by tying chains to the track, placing wheel-skids etc as per standard safety protocol.
Ranjeet and Shailender noticed that from the steep cutting of the hill beside the track, slush and mud were also falling on the coaches immediately rear to the front engine. In order to ensure the protection of passengers, they shifted the passengers from the first 3 coaches to the rear coaches and un-coupled these coaches from the rest of the train.
Displaying alertness, and presence of mind, the crew took instruction from their senior Officers in Hubballi Divisional Control Office and utilised the rear (banking) engine to pull the train with 345 passengers back to Kulem Station. The Guard Shri Shailender Kumar accompanied along with Locopilot Shri SD Meena, Assistant Loco Pilot Shri SK Saini to take the train safely, with passengers to Kulem, while Ranjeet Kumar and his Assistant Shri Hashid K stayed back with the derailed engine near the spot to assist in restoration.
BACKGROUND OF THE GHAT SECTION
The Castle Rock – Kulem Ghat section is 27 km long: it is a single line rail section passing through western Ghats in the uninhabited territory through forested areas.
The entire Ghat section has a steep gradient (1 in 37) and trains are pushed with engines in the rear (for providing sufficient horsepower) in addition to the engines in front. The stations between Castle Rock and Kulem, namely Caranzol, Dudhsagar & Sonaulim are connected only by rail with no road connectivity. This is challenging terrain. On 22.7.21 and 23.7.21, this section witnessed an intense rainfall of 640 mm in 48 hours, which resulted in land-slide.
For displaying courage and exemplary presence of mind in taking swift action to shift passengers to safer coaches, and transport the train back to Kulem, the General Manager SWR Shri Gajanan Mallya has appreciated the Crew and announced a cash reward as a sign of encouragement.
The Crew of this train, have acted as ‘first responder’ at site, even before the rescue team arrived, resulting in saving of the lives of passengers.
