Mumbai: It has been two weeks that Mumbai has seen AC local run on the railway tracks of Western line in Mumbai and the two weeks have been quite satisfying according to Western Railway. The local has seen 40,000 passengers in two weeks of running in the suburban system, recording an earning of almost Rs 15 lakh.
The local began operations on December 25, 2017. The train plied between Borivali to Churchgate initially. From January 1, 12 trips of the local were scheduled between Churchgate and Virar railway stations in a day. It does not ply on the weekends for maintenance purpose.
have seen an upward trend in commuters travelling in the local. The number of commuters taking weekly and monthly passes has shown an increase. Commuters who are taking weekly passes largely form the regular office crowd . They may opt to take an AC train ride in case its timings clash with their regular local train ride,” said a senior official to Indian Express.
“From January 1, crucial railway stations like Virar, Bhayander that see large footfall have been added to the local ride. We will require time to analyse this in detail. Till now, commuters who hold first class passes have been demanding entry inside the AC local without additional cost. We are analysing these demands,” added a railway official.

MUMBAI: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has decided to connect the fast-growing Mira-Bhayander Municipal Corporation (MBMC) with an elevated Metro, to help reduce congestion in Western Railway suburban trains and Western Express Highway traffic, at a cost of around Rs 3,600 crore.
MMRDA has begun construction of Metro corridorsD N Nagar to Dahisar (Metro 2A) and Andheri to Dahisar via WEH (Metro 7), but Mira-Bhayander residents have long been demanding connectivity.
MMRDA additional metropolitan commissioner Pravin Darade said, "The Metro corridor will run 9km into Mira-Bhayander. We plan a station for
every km, which means there will be nine."
The stations' exact location will be finalised when carrying out a detailed project report. The Metro corridor is likely to originate at Golden Nest Circle. It alignment will be along the Surat-Dahisar highway, before moving on the Mira-Bhayander road via Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Chowk (Kashimira junction).
Darade said, "We have interoperability with Metro VII, which run along the WEH. Some services can operate from Dahisar and others from Mira-Bhayander."
As per WR's ticket sale data, Bhayander has an originating passenger count of 1.73 lakh per day and Mira Road 1.11 lakh.
Mira Road resident Rupesh Desai said, "It is extremely risky to board a train from Mira Road or Bhayander during morning peak hours as all come packed from Virar. The Metro will help reduce hardships by a huge extent."
Bhayander resident Santosh Rane said, "Road transport is not feasible as the WEH is choked near the Kashimira Junction and then at the toll naka. Traffic also moves at a snail's pace up to Bandra. The trains is the only feasible option as it is the fastest mode of travel."
In December 2016, the MBMC had unanimously passed a resolution demanding extension of the Metro line beyond Dahisar. All parties, including the ruling BJP-Shiv Sena, Congress and NCP agreed to the need to extend the Metro. The proposal was then sent to MMRDA, the agency implementing Metro projects
The civic administration had suggested that the line running on the East can pass through Kashimira, Golden Nest Circle, Maxus Mall, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose ground and Bhayander (W).
The line running on the West (Link Road) can pass through Mira Road, Bhayander (W), the municipality had said.
Since October 2015, residents took to social media and signed petitions demanding #MetroForMiraBhayander. They felt that if the Metro can run up to Dahisar, it can be extended to Mira-Bhayander. The Metro is seen as the only hope in decongesting public transport in the western suburbs.

Very good step taken by Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA)!
Bhayandar, Mira-Bhayandar, MiraRoad has now become much posh and densely populated area and deserved to be considered for Metro connection in the original plan, it is good to note that the area is being included in Metro Network. This project will bring relief to the ultra crowded Virar locals.

ommitted suicide.
The man, thought to be in his 30s, jumped in front of a Churchgatebound train at Bhayandar station, as the train coming from Naigaon entered the station. CCTV footage shows the man - dressed in a pink shirt and jeans -- patiently waiting for the train with other passengers on Platform 6.
However, as soon as the train could be seen entering the platform, he jumped onto the tracks and was killed instantly. His body was retrieved from under the train wheels. Apart from his cellphone and some cash,
he had nothing on him at the time of the incident.
GRP officials are now trying to track down his family by accessing his call data record (CDR).
Mahesh Bagwe, Senior Inspector, Vasai GRP, said, "We have put the number for tracking and are trying everything possible to trace his identity. We have recovered only a mobile phone and some basic cash from his body."
Despite taking precautionary measures, suicides and accidents often take place in the city's railway tracks. A total of 228 deaths took place along the Western Railway network between January and June this year. Of this, 40 were suicides.
