The first commercial passenger service ran on 16th April, 1853 from Bombay.
But railways were used in the country long before that. I am not sure where they got the 1832 from, but as of now, the oldest documented railway known, is the RedHill Railroad in Madras, which was opened in 1836 by Sir Arthur Cotton, of the Madras Corps of Engineers. This line had extensive freight operations, occasional passenger runs, and locomotives and wagons that were designed and built in India as well.
In the same year (1836), he operated another

short railway line near Trichy.
Between 1842-45, a short railway was operated in Visakhapatnam, then near Rajahmundry (both in Andhra Pradesh) between 1847-52 (Both railways were constructed by Sir Cotton). And a more famous railway, that was used in Roorkee from 1851.

sorry sir, got the year wrong, which the reporter got correct for commercial operations. thanks for correcting.
Actually, the train that ran on that day started its journey at 15:55 and CR (formerly GIPR before IR came into existence) followed this tradition of running a Thane train at 15:55 from BBVT (later CST and CSMT). unfortunately they discontinued (amidst protests from renowned ppl) about a decade back! british legacy shown the door? show the door to DC of DQ, whose heritage do you want to carry?

Yes sir that 1851 line was a BG one and was constructed between Trichinopoly (Tiruchchirapalli Jn) - Negapatam (Nagappattinam Jn) at that time, and was exclusively for unloading freights at Nagapattinam port (if i am not wrong).

The Trichy-Nagapattinam BG line was opened in phases between 1861-62.
In 1836, during the construction of the anicut across the Kollidam river (West of Trichy), Sir Cotton used a short (approximately a quarter of a mile) railway line with hand-pulled wagons, for aiding the construction.
