#berthmultiplexing
I was asked by many of you if I could frame down the definition to the above term and the tiny little intrinsic details associated with the same in a single blog for easy reference. So, here it goes:
Imagine:
a) A train which follows the route HWH-BWN-DHN-MGS-CNB-NDLS.
b)
...
100 berths allocated for ARP Booking all the journey leg/s combined.
Now someone comes and books all the 100 berths for HWH-BWN. The availability status say enters RAC (RAC 1 being the current status).
Now again assume, someone else comes in and wants to book 10 tickets for BWN-DHN. He would get all his berths confirmed.
Confused? The status was at RAC 1. Isn't it?
Don't ponder over this again. It is very simple. Even though all the 100 berths were consumed up earlier, the booking was only till BWN leaving the rest of the portion vacant. So technically anyone can book 100 berths for BWN-NDLS or enroute.
This, precisely is #berthmultiplexing where a berth is split up into many parts and serves multiple passenger for multiple journey legs at the same time. (If anyone is familiar with the phrase "Multiplexing" in Computers, he can always relate these two).
This is one very important concept which forms the basis to almost all the phenomena that takes place in IR. What are those?
i) Confirmation through different quota.
ii) Splitting up various passengers in a single PNR into various quota for the same journey leg.
iii) #chartingatoriginatingstation
iv) #chartingatpreviousremotestation
So, when do we know that the berths are going to get forwarded? How does this happen actually? In what ways are the berths being used up?
Would answer to all these in my next post, once everyone is done understanding whatever is been written above.

Re# 876440-6
Assuming that everyone has understood the previously discussed points, let me proceed with the last and final explanation.
#chartingatoriginatingstation
Now, I have explained above how #berthmultiplexing takes place which subsequently might lead to forwarding of berths. Now, the "forwarding" thing can happen during booking (Explained above) or even at chart preparation.
Imagine, a train which follows the route HWH-BWN-DHN-MGS-CNB-NDLS.
Now,
...
say 150 berths are earmarked only for HWH-DHN section leaving the remaining portion vacant. I would also assume that there are 100 ARP berths for DHN-NDLS sector.
Now the difference we would notice here is that even though someone may book the 150 berths for HWH-DHN sector, berths would not get immediately forwarded. It would only be forwarded once chart is been prepared at HWH for HWH-DHN sector. That is once the chart gets prepared for HWH-DHN sector, the vacant portion of the berths DHN-NDLS would be immediately forwarded and this would result in atleast 50(150-100) confirmations of Waitlisted passengers between DHN-NDLS.
This further summarises that unlike the previous phenomena, we are unlikely to see variation in the waitlisted numbers during booking and confirmation would happen only during chart preparation. To let these confirmation take place it would not be necessary or mandatory for chart preparation to actually take place for DHN-NDLS sector. In such instances, the system would show something like:
Pass 1:
Confirmed (Booking Status [Originally in Waitlist], Quota)
Chart Not Prepared
Once chart is been prepared for DHN-NDLS sector, this would reflect as "Chart Prepared".
iv) #chartingatpreviousremotestation
Concept here is the same as previous one. Just, instead of HWH-DHN imagine this as BWN-DHN where BWN is an important remote station for this train and carried a lot of berths for its own and hence sees its own chart preparation.
BWN-DHN=> 150
DHN-NDLS=> 100
Remaining (150-100)=50 berths gets forwarded during chart preparation at DHN resulting in confirmation of waitlisted passengers ex-DHN or beyond as their boarding point/quota distribution might be.
This is all I had to say about #berthmultiplexing. Hope, I could make everyone understand about the tiny nitty-gritty of the same.
PS:- Do note that #berthmultiplexing applies for Tatkal too.
Thanks.

is the charting of pooled quota done at source itself? as pooled quota is same through out the journey of a train and same berthis used for different pools enroute, so i guess pqwl is charted at source itself. can any one pls confirm it?

PQ always sees chart preparation from originating station. However it may not be at the same time w.r.t. GN Quota Chart Preparation ex - Originating Station.
However berth/s may get confirmed (Without Chart getting prepared) due to ##chartingatoriginatingstation and #chartingatpreviousremotestation (Previous/Originating Stations seeing RL)

today i have learnt a new thing and would like to share here for the benefit of members...if any train has vacant berths from its origin in general quota but waiting list in a station later that lies in remote location quota, then during charting of the origin station itself, the remote location wl is provided the berth number and status as chart not prepared. The example is of pnr no.6107225822.too many vacant berths from gaya,so wl from sbg provided with berth number at gaya itself. I initially thought to book it from gaya and get the boarding point changed later, but then decided against it and took the risk just to know the procedure adopted by railways and it paid off. Thanks indian railways. I have got a confirm ticket for me today.

and every berth of each and every coach is earmarked against a particular quota applying for a particular leg.
For example, there can be multiple RS and RL Quota in a train. If a berth, say LB 1 in 2AC is earmarked for X-Z RL Quota, and a passenger travelling against Y-Z RL Quota shall get the same berth provided the passenger booked against X-Z RL Quota deboards at Y. This would leave the berth vacant at Y to be then utilised from the same destination.
This is precisely kinown as charting at previous remote station.
Now a berth when earmarked for A-X/Z GN Quota; If a person booked against GN Quota (A-Z) deboards at X (Assuming A-X also comes against GN), it will make way for remote quota commencing at X (X-Z). Now a passenger having booked against X-Z Remote Quota will get direct confirmation due to charting at originating station, even though the same berth was not initially earmarked for X-Z Remote Quota.
Now even though this berth was not earmarked for RL Quota, still then it is being used to accommodate the latter. (Due to manipulations in journey legs)

#berthmultiplexing
#charting
#chartingatoriginatingstation
#chartingatpreviousremotestation
Charting is usually done 2-3-4 hours prior to the scheduled/rescheduled departure of the train. Now, for trains leaving in the morning, till 11:59 am, charting can be
...
done in the previous night or can follow the same 2-3-4 hours structure. Ex: For Coromandel ex:MAS, I have seen charting done at 23:00 hours in the night and also at 04:00 hours in the morning. For Yeshvantpur Duronto ex: HWH, I have seen charting done the previous night at 21:00 hours and also on its day of departure at 09:00 hours in the morning. Now, the above mostly applies for the originating station or stations forming a single cluster. Ex: HWH & HWH/KGP, BCT & BCT/BVI and so on!!
For intermediate stations it simply depends on whether it sees its own charting or not. For ex: Dibrugarh-Yeshvantpur Express, if we consider that VSKP does not sees its own charting, but rather it shares quota with HWH and HWH being the more important station sees its charting, thus the charting time for VSKP would depend on the charting timings of HWH. In normal circumstances charting for VSKP should get prepared sometime around 12 in the morning. However due to the quota sharing, charting for VSKP would be prepared the previous night around 21:00/22:00 hours along with the charts for HWH. This is why you would find a new rule popping up in IRCTC which says that, "For tickets confirmed through originating station and/or charting of remote station" cannot be cancelled". Another wing of this rule is that, let us say that HWH-VSKP/BZA has the same quota to that of VSKP-BZA and/or is a constituent of GN/PQ. Both HWH and VSKP sees seperate charting Let us say a waitlisted passenger of HWH-VSKP gets confirmed. Now if any passenger is holding a WL'ed ticket for the remaining leg of the journey, i.e. VSKP-BZA would get confirmed even though charting for VSKP has not yet happened and the coach and berth no. would be allocated then and there. Here, even though the chart is not prepared, you would not be allowed to cancel the ticket. For tickets getting confirmed through Outstation Quota, the list is send to the nearest remote station which sees charting and is usually done the night previous to the day of the departure. List of the defence people eligible to avail DF is also send to the nearest charting station. Waitlisted DP's are merged and confirmed through HO. The process of allocation of HO can take place the previous night (For morning trains) and/or 2-3-4 hours before the scheduled departure of the train (Before Charting). No manual corrections is allowed therein, once the names and other details has been fed in the system.
