TIMES NEWS NETWORK Kolkata: A 46-year-old mason sprinted along a rail track at Patipukur,risking his life to stop an approaching passenger train that was running into a cracked line. Shashthi Adhikari waved a towel,desperately trying to draw the attention of the driver,who screeched to a halt barely 50m from the crack. It was a six-inch crack or rail fracture.A train had left Dumdum station and picked up speed before it was stopped.After leaving the station,it could have reached 20 kmph, an Eastern Railway spokesperson said.Officials said such cracks can develop due to sudden temperature changes. It was repaired within 40 minutes and services were resumed, the spokesperson added. A retired senior railway official said a six-inch crack could have been fatal had a speeding train run into it.The approaching train had over 2,000 passengers.
