The North Western Railway has awarded ₹426 crore worth of tenders for Kavach deployment on 1,600 kilometers with completion targeted for 2025. Successful trial runs have been conducted on Vande Bharat trains between Mathura and Palwal. Kavach deployment involves various components, including station Kavach, RFID tags, and Kavach towers, which are being installed and certified for safety. The Cabinet has allocated 5 MHz spectrum in the 700 MHz band for Kavach's national rollout. The annual capacity for Kavach installation is currently 1,500 kilometers, increasing to 2,500 kilometers in FY25 and 5,000 kilometers in FY26 as new vendors are approved. Existing vendors include Medha, Kernex, and HBL PowerSystems. The cost per kilometer for trackside equipment is ₹50 lakh, and per loco is ₹70 lakh. The FY24 budget allocated ₹710 crore for Kavach, while the FY25 Interim Budget allocated nearly ₹560 crore. The project has seen significant progress with optical fiber cable laying across 3,040 kilometers, 269 towers installed, 186 Station Kavach installations, trackside equipment installed in 827 kilometers, and 170 loco equipment setup. There are currently 139 Kavach-enabled locomotives, including electric multiple unit rakes.
