Can Budget 2024 build the safety net for happy rail rides?, ET Infra

India's 2023-24 budget allocated a record Rs 2.4 lakh crore to the Indian Railways, a nine-fold increase since 2013-14. This funding is aimed at laying new tracks, decongesting the network, and making it future-ready, including addressing the need for 1 lakh kilometers of new tracks over the next 25 years. The...

focus is on modernizing the network with Vande Bharat and Amrit Bharat trains, eliminating waiting lists, and introducing dedicated freight corridors. However, despite these advancements, India faced several train derailments in 2023, culminating in the tragic Balasore train accident, highlighting the need for improved safety measures. The Supreme Court has pressed the government for updates on the implementation of the ‘Kavach’ automatic train protection system. While the number of significant train mishaps has reduced significantly since 2000-01, the Balasore accident raised concerns about the scope of the Kavach system. India has a railway network of over 68,000 kilometers and is currently building 2,843 km of dedicated freight corridors, of which 1,724 km have been commissioned.

India ka 2023-24 budget mein Indian Railways ke liye record Rs 2.4 lakh crore allocate kiya gaya hai, jo ki 2013-14 se 9 guna zyada hai. Yeh funding new tracks layne, network ko decongest karne aur future-ready banane ke liye hai, jismein aage aane waale 25 saalon mein 1 lakh kilometer...

new tracks ki zaroorat ko address karna bhi shamil hai. Focus Vande Bharat aur Amrit Bharat trains ke saath network ko modernize karne, waiting lists ko khatam karne aur dedicated freight corridors introduce karne par hai. Lekin, in progress ke baavajood, India ne 2023 mein kai train derailments ka saamna kiya, jiska climax tragic Balasore train accident tha, jisse safety measures ko improve karne ki zaroorat par zor diya gaya hai. Supreme Court ne ‘Kavach’ automatic train protection system ke implementation par update ke liye government par zor diya hai. Jabki 2000-01 se significant train mishaps ki sankhya mein kaafi kami aayi hai, lekin Balasore accident ne Kavach system ki scope ke bare mein chintaon ko jaga diya. India ka 68,000 kilometer se zyada ka railway network hai aur ismein 2,843 km dedicated freight corridors banaye ja rahe hain, jismein se 1,724 km commission ho chuke hain.
