The second phase will extend the line to Vizhinjam, adding 10 more stations and creating a parallel rail line. The project was sanctioned in 1997 but faced delays due to funding issues. In 2021, the state government allocated Rs 2,000 crore to the project and requested the Railways to share the construction cost. The CM wrote to the railway minister requesting approval for the revised estimate and cost-sharing.
