The running staff is informed in advance 'bout their overtime and they can't be assigned without their consent. They can only be forced in emergencies where performin' poorly ain't an option. And they get a fat bonus for every extra hour they put in, more than their regular pay.

But the real issue is with promotions. The number of LPs/ALPs gettin' promoted has been droppin' while the demand for passenger staff keeps goin' up. Most candidates ain't able to meet the standards for passenger train overhaul. And the final blow came with the 7th pay commission. Ever since the salaries and perks got jacked up, railway employees have developed this "Chalta Hain" attitude.
