Beginning December 23, the Kongu Express that runs from Coimbatore to Hazarat Nizamuddin will be operated with refurbished Utkrisht coaches to provide greater comfort to passengers. The Indian Railways launched Utkrisht in April 2018 to refurbish 640 conventional coaches at ₹400 crore to improve their condition. Of the targeted coaches, 10 rakes of six trains are with the Southern Railway. The exteriors of the coaches are painted apricot yellow and blood red. The interiors refurbishing includes provision of LED lights, BLDC energy efficient fans, new curtains that match the colour of the rexin cover of the berth. The coaches have bio-toilets with health faucets and trash bins placed at the wash basin and also inside the toilets. Toilets in air-conditioned coaches have soap dispensers.
