Southern Railway undertook a trial run on the newly-laid broad gauge track between Karur and Mohanur in Namakkal district on Thursday.Chief Engineer (Construction) A. K. Khandelwal, along with a battery of officials , inspected the new track and the trial run with a diesel locomotive from Karur to Mohanur. The stability of the track every 100 metres, their structure and various parameters were inspected in the to and fro trial run.Special poojas were performed for the diesel locomotive prior to the run. Works for laying a new broad-gauge line between Karur and Salem commenced in 1996. It has been going on in bouts of pace ever since.Right from land acquisition to completion of civil works and allied activities, the work progressed at snail's pace. The new route would cut the distance between Karur and Salem by around 45 km. At present, the trains proceed from Karur to Salem via Erode, consuming more time. With the efforts of M.Thambi Durai, MP, who stressed for the expedition of the project, the Railways allotted Rs.135 crore for the project. In the first phase, the Railway decided to complete the 50-km Salem-Namakkal stretch. While the works were to be completed before the end of the current year, traffic might commence in the next fiscal.

If every thing goes well...
It will also help as a De-congest the Erode junction.
Banglore-Madurai/Cape trains can take this route.

From Bangalore 2 daily trains are there towards Karur apart from two weekly trains. Definitely they can save time or rather postpone the departure time at SBC itself.
Few north india bound trains also will get benefitted along with TEN-JAMMU Exp (slip coaches attached to Navyug/Himsagar) now can go to Salem jn. instead of Erode Jn. once this line is functional.

I feel TVC will be far to reach via the new route what you mentioned as its a single, non-electrified line where as present route via CBE-ERS is a double line with electrified till TVC..
