Tension prevailed for some time at the Anakapalle railway station in the district on Wednesday morning when a large number of railway passengers staged a protest against the railway management for decreasing the number of bogies of the Kakinada-Visakhapatnam passenger train to nine from 16. They demanded that the authorities immediately take steps to restore the bogies.
Shouting slogans against the railway management, the agitators, including women and children, stopped the Kakinada-Visakhapatnam passenger train at the station for nearly an hour.
They also exchanged heated arguments with the RPF personnel for arresting a passenger and private employee at Duvvada Gopi. An agitator from Anakapalle, Mr Ramana Rao said that nearly 6,000 passengers travel on the passenger train every day from Anakapalle. Removal of bogies caused inconvenience to daily commuters, he said. Anakapalle railway station master Ramesh and town sub-inspector Krishna Rao tried to pacify the agitators.
Mr Ramesh assured the agitators that steps would be taken to restore the bogies as soon as possible. The agitators also demanded release by the RPF of the arrested passenger.
