I feel that it is hightime that the Railway Ministry raises fares of Suburban train tickets (Including Kolkata Metro) and Unreserved Second Class by 60%, all Metro corporations and Road transport corporations/associations raise their fares by 60% as well. Then the governments of various states in collaboration with the Centre should introduce integrated transport passes in cities valid for everything, from suburban trains to buses to taxis to even national railways which shall give the passengers the option to pay only a 10% increased fare (Not the 60%). The customer has to top-up the card with credit he wants to. No charge will be levied on recharging these...
more... 'Smart Travel Cards'. A nominal bi-monthly card rental fare shall also be charged from the customer and this should go to the Centre and State by a ratio of 60:40. A one time caution fund shall also be issued which the card holder can get back by surrendering his/her card. This shall promote digitization of the transport industry and give passengers and commuters the option for seamless travel, avoiding the need to purchase seperate tickets for everything. Chip readers can be installed at all railway stations (Basically a miniature ATVM), taxi booths, bus stands, reservation offices. These smart cards would act like SIMs where in each chip would be different and have a unique number issued by the Central Government. This 'Smart Travel Cards' will act like Aadhar and will be linked to Aadhar only.
----------------------------------------------
For example :
If a journey from A to C is as follows
A - B train journey fare : 100
B - C bus journey fare : 40
----------------------------------------------
For passengers not using a card
A - B train journey fare : 160
B - C bus journey fare : 64
----------------------------------------------
For passengers using a card
A - B train journey fare : 110
B - C bus journey fare : 44
----------------------------------------------
A 31.25% saving over not using a card will act as a huge incentive for passengers to opt for the card
