Transportation by road & air mode is costliest as well as most environmentally damaging and on the other hand transportation over inland water and rails is cheapest. Unfortunately three fourth of total national goods are transported by road/air and only 25% by rail/waterways. (At the time of independence it was a very healthy 89% for Railways!)
.
With govt. investing very heavily over road infrastructure with about 25km new roads being constructed per day as against only 7-8 km for railways, the proportion shall continue to get skewed in favour of road and...
more... logistics cost shall never come down to desired levels.
.
Highway & Shipping minister minister drastically increasing the rate of construction of (most inefficient) roadways and talking of doing so with a vision to bring down the logistics cost of our country is irony!!
.
Improvement in infrastructure is very much required, but it has to be done properly in such a way that the national logistics cost is minimised. Just going for heavy investment is not going to give full benefits.
