Despite being a divisional HQ from the past 5 decades and being a major junction, Guntakal has not seen any major development unlike Nandyal, Dhone and Nanded, Hubli and Manmad.
It all started with the laying of Kallur - Gooty line which has snatched away the importance of Guntakal junction. The railway authorities for some reason have laid this line without laying a parallel BG line between Guntakal - Kallur when the Guntakal - Bangalore gauge conversion was taken up. To retain the MG connection between Tirupati - Secunderabad, this line was left without conversion.
Later

when Chandrababu Naidu was the CM and Bandaru Dattatreya became the MoSR, the Katpadi - Pakala - Tirupati gauge conversion was taken up.
In addition, construction of the Gooty - Pendekallu by pass line has become a major blow for the development of Guntakal station, as most of the trains are running via this line citing loco reversal as a hindrance and also to save 40 - 50 kms of distance.
If you see, trains are being run with loco reversal at Hubli and Vijayawada despite the by pass lines are available.
Also, its because of lack of interest of local politicans which has contirbuted to the miseries of Guntakal.
Ananta Venkatarami Reddy was the only person who took some interest in the development of this region and was instrumental in getting the Kallur - Guntakal gauge conversion project.
If not for all the trains, I have regisetered a grievance in the pg portal for the diversion of APSK and Kacheguda - Chennai Egmore via Guntakal for which the authorities have stated that it is not feasible due to operational constraint. When they are doing the same in Hubli & Vijayawada, why not it is feasible here ?
Scores of trains have been introduced via Gooty - Pendekallu and trust me that 6 weeklies were introduced in the 2014 -2015 budget, courtsey, MoSR Kotloa Surya Prakash Reddy.
Actually, Venkatarami Reddy was to become the MoSR. But since he was vocal in supporting united Andhra Pradesh, he was sidelined and it was given to MoSR who took a neutral stand in the state cause.
And without considering the passenger requirements, he has routed all the trains via Kurnool. Imagine the Kacheguda - Tirupati DD which has been running in huge losses via Kurnool for 2.6 years. Its the same fate for Yeswantpur - Kacehguda tri weekly express too.
Only in the recent times few weeklies have been introduced. On an average, GTL gets a weekly train per year whereas scores of trains are being introduced in Nanded, Dhone regions.
Can't help but praying God for the development of this region.

unless new inter city/overnight express trains introduced from gtl to all directions upto 300 km on par with other jn/div. there won't be any significant development for this junction/division in future i think. may be state gov. need to develop gtl town on par with other big towns in rayalaseema to support this and get the required patronage/demand.

As mentioned in the other reply, GTL needs some intercity style trains in all directions. Though it is a major railway junction, the town itself is not really a big town unlike Vijayawada, Hubli which are the second largest cities in their respective states and have considerable passenger traffic. There isn't much originating traffic for long distance trains here. The demand is chiefly for short-distance intra-state trians, which GTL is definitely lacking in. Some development is required in this region to generate the necessary traffic. Even then, It is better to start trains from DMM/TPTY as GTL does not have enough originating traffic.
The Gooty-Kalluru line was laid in the 1980's a long-term plan to provide a shorter

route between Bangalore and Hyderabad once the conversion of the GTL--Dhone-SC line was complete. GTL-Kalluru was not converted because it was the only link between the Meter gauge network of Tamil Nadu and the meter gauge network of North India via SC-NED-Akola ( There was another MG route via Salem-Tumkur-Bellary-GTL, but it was a much longer route). At that time, GTL was only a minor railway town and did not have much importance outside of railways.
Dhone too has got many trains only because it's on the shortest route between SBC-SC, and not because of any deliberate attempts to divert development from GTL to Dhone. Decisions made in this region have always been taken for the benefit of Bangalore and Secunderabad.
It's high time the state government initiates some development in this region to drive up passenger demand and make a more compelling case for additional railway facilities in this area.
But it has been a few good years for GTL division in terms of route infrastructure. GTL-RU was electrified a couple of years ago and GTL-GY-SBC has been completed recently. GTL-Wadi is in the final stages of electrification and GTL-GNT is moving at a good pace. Once GTL-GNT is electrified, we can definitely hope to see a intercity train in this route connecting GTL to the state capital. An express service to TPTY/CTO, diversion of BZA-DMM via GTL with some speed-up and a connection to the coastal districts ( like VSKP-DMM) will be very useful for this region.

True that it is the most neglected of all divisional HQs but still gets a lot of funding thanks to SCR. If you notice - barring DMM-PAK line, rest of GTL's lines are electrified or in progress. Looking at Karnataka, that's many times better.
-
KSK should have been thru TK-ASK-CTA-BAY-GTL-RC-SC route but due to politics of 2004 elections, it runs in the shortest distance than for the state that it was allocated. If it had been then, GTL would have benefited.
-
...

Once TK-RDG line is done in the next 20-30 years (SWR's efficiency) many trains will be routed thru GTL.
-
Many new weeklies and bi-weeklies do get stop at GTL (coming from BAY side).
-
The special from RC to BZA/MTM got cancelled due to poor patronage from RC/MALM/AD and GTL itself. This shows that GTL doesn't have the requisite passenger traffic for originating trains or nearby originating trains.
-
1. However the DMM-BZA train can surely be routed thru GTL with some speeding up.
2. DHNE-GNT passenger too can be extended to GTL.
3. One more train to TPTY thru PAK-DMM can be started.
4. YPR-KCG tri-weekly (currently flop) should be thru TK-RDG-BAY-GTL-RC-SC because RDG part of AP has almost nothing to Hyderabad.
-
Politics too Rayalseema suffers: Kurnool lost the capital race to Vijayawada region. GTL was never spoken of as new HQ for AP rail zone at all.
-
Lastly does GTL really need a new ELS? After the current ongoing electrification is completed there would be not many loco changes there. ELS will be needed at either WADI or GR. Also a ELS in SWR is needed either at HPT or UBL or SBC.
