The railways is all set to introduce the first ever double-decker superfast express (Uday) train service connecting Kerala.
Sources from the Southern railway told TOI that the new double-decker train service connecting Chennai to Thiruvananthapuram twice a week, will be announced along with the new railway timetable to be released in October.
"Chennai-Thiruvananthapuram...
more... stretch is one of the busiest stretches in South India. On all trains, there are scores of passengers on waiting list. Introduction of a double decker Uday train, will not only double up the chances of reserved tickets for passengers, but would bring in additional revenue for the railways," said a senior officer from the Southern Railway.
If authorities are to be believed, the Thiruvananthapuram-Chennai Uday service will begin by 7 pm and will reach Chennai in 14 to 15 hours. The Chennai-Thiruvananthapuram service will also be overnight. At present, trains in this stretch take 15 to 17 hours to cover the same distance.
It will be a fully-air-conditioned chair car train, with 10 or 11 coaches. Each coach can accommodate 120 persons. The Uday train would run approximately at a speed of 110 kilometres per hour and the fares would also be reasonable.
