Electrification of Railway Lines
Electric and Diesel traction constitute the principal modes of traction on Indian Railways. The share of traffic in terms of traffic output in Gross Tonne Kilometres (GTKM) for passenger and freight services hauled under Electric and Diesel traction as per the latest statistics available for the financial year 2013-14 is as under:

28 numbers Railway Electrification Projects consisting 6608 Route Kilometres at an estimated cost of `6746.45 crores have been included in Railway Budget 2015-16 subject to obtaining requisite statutory clearances.

Depending upon the overall availability of resources, the targets for commissioning of railway electrification projects are fixed on yearly basis.
This information was given by the Minister of State for Railways Shri Manoj Sinha in a written reply to a question in Lok Sabha today.
