if i book a tkt from delhi to ranchi in train 12454 and put boarding stn as kanpur .
how much will i pay , can it be done.

You have to book the ticket first and later change the boarding station

and two days before journey will go to stn and change the boarding stn

No matter wherever you book, if you change the boarding point at the time of booking itself, you would be allotted the quota for the changed station (New boarding point)
basically, if you are booking at delhi and would like to enjoy kanpur quota, will it not reduce the quota of kanpur which even otherwise has a limited number of seats. you are eating into kanpur quota.
it is not ridiculous.
if you change the boarding station later after booking your ticket, the berth till kanpur may or may not be allotted to anybody (depending upon vacancy) or a short distance passenger will enjoy the benefit of your vacancy till kanpur. after kanpur your berth is assured.

it is ridiculous... because the person is paying from new delhi. and y to passenger has to bother about quota??? he has to travel only. quota is headache of ir. whetther they shud utilize the delhi quota, or konapur quota.
