I am not sure how many of us know the full history of Vikramshila Express. Having travelled in this train since early 80s, here is a brief history:
Mid 70s - Started as 167 up / 168 down Vikramshila Express from BGP to DLI. The train departed from BGP twice a week at 14:20 and reached NDLS at 10:55 next day. It was almost always in time. 1220 kms in 20:40 hours at average speed of 59 km/hr. Later the arrival time at NDLS was changed to 11:55. Train was hauled by steam engine till MGS and then Electric engine to NDLS. Stops were Jamalpur, Kiul, Mokama, Bakhtiarpur, Patna, Ara, Buxar, Mughalsarai, Allahabad, Kanpur.

80s to July 2003 - Train was made daily and run combined with Magadh express. Both trains had about 8-10 coaches each and combined were about 18-20 coaches. The departure from BGP and arrival at NDLS was unchanged.
July 2003 - Vikramshila and Magadh were separated. Vikramshila started running between BGP and NDLS with it's full rake and no commercial stop between PNBE and NDLS. However, it is still slower than the original train.

Sir- Thanks for the correction. Vikramshila and Magadh did run combined until 2003. I have edited the original post on history of Vikramshila.
However, you are incorrect in saying that VS never ran between BGP-NDLS with a full rake before July 2003. When VS started, it was a separate train with a full rake between BGP and NDLS running twice a week (BGP dep 14:20, NDLS arr 10.55) There was no Magadh Express at that time. I remember travelling in this Vikramshila in October 1983.
In 1984, Magadh Express was started (PNBE

dep 20:00, NDLS arr 11:55). Vikramshila from BGP with 8 coaches was combined with Magadh in PNBE with 10 coaches to make a 18 coach train between PNBE and NDLS. It was a complex train to run. Steam engine between BGP and KIUL, Diesel between KIUL and MGS, and Electric between MGS and NDLS. In PNBE the SLR/Guard coach from the end of the train had to be attached to the Vikramshila rake before it proceeded from PNBE to BGP, and similar coach redistribution was done during it's journey from BGP to NDLS. The pantry car operated only between PNBE and NDLS. It was extremely punctual. I must have taken this train from BGP to NDLS at least 20 times during 1985 and 1993 and it was almost always on time.

One more correction. I looked through the 1977 railway timetable and see Vikramshila Express (167 up/ 168 dn) in it. So, this train must have started in the 70s. It used to go upto Delhi via New Delhi. Another interesting fact, there were only 20 superfast trains in India at that time, and Vikramshila was one of them.

These days, every other day, we are getting requests from members to allow email login to their FB-based IRI account. 10 years ago, we had given the option for users to login through FaceBook - in retrospect, this was a mistake. These days, apparently, users are quitting FaceBook in droves because...
