It was specifically operated to transport British officials. Before 1930, regular people were not allowed to travel on Punjab Mail. It started on June 1, 1912. It was originally started for the white people, you know. This train was specially operated to take British officials, civil servants, and their families from Bombay to Delhi and then to the northwest border regions of British India. Initially, it ran from Ballard Pier Railway Station to Peshawar. In 1914, its starting station was changed to Victoria Terminus (now Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus) in Mumbai. After independence, its destination was changed to Firozpur Station, located on the India-Pakistan border. Since 1930, third-class compartments were also introduced for the general public. Old Punjab Mail used to run on coal-powered engines and wooden coaches. Today, this train has 24 coaches, while initially, there were only 6 coaches. Among them, three coaches were reserved for the postal system. In 1945, air-conditioned coaches were introduced. Two years before independence, in 1945, air-conditioned coaches were first introduced in Punjab Mail. At one point in time, this train held the title of being the fastest train in British India.
