proposal has been floated to establish two new outstation platforms at the Vasai Road railway yard in Mumbai, in order to boost connectivity to Southern India. The Western Railway is contemplating the bid which has been tabled in view of the demands of the people residing in this region. Decongesting the load of the partially saturated platforms at Bandra and Mumbai Central Terminus, the new platforms will also be a convenient option for passengers heading towards Hyderabad and other such destinations from the Northern suburbs in Mumbai.
New platforms at Vasai Road station: Convenient or cumbersome?

Senior officials of the Western Railways have surveyed the land identified for the project. In addition to this proposed land, the land which is currently used for the transportation of freight materials will also be granted to the WR for the new platforms, after the construction of the Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) in 2022. Besides, connectivity along the East-West corridor at the Vasai Road station will also be provided by WR, read reports.
The decision to establish the new platforms has received a contrasting feedback. Regular travellers have welcomed the move stating that it will be convenient for them to board a train to South India from here instead of from Dadar or Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, which are far off. On the other hand, some people have stated that running operations from Vasai Road will be a difficult task. The railways will have to link the trains from these platforms via Vasai-Diva-Panvel which will be very cumbersome. Instead, an established terminus will be able to the task better, the opinions highlighted.
Initially, the Western Railways too, had proposed to construct a terminus at Vasai Road in 2013, which failed at execution. In 2017, the same project was pushed again, however, to no avail. By 2018, WR announced to set up a terminal here and the proposition included the construction of 4 platforms, 3 stabling lines for outstation trains and a new terminal building by 2023.
Boosting Mumbai's suburban 'local' train system network

The project also pipelines to connect these platforms to Mumbai's suburban local train system to operate services between Vasai and Panvel. The project, however, needs to be approved for the Indian Railways and may be tabled for the Railway Ministry later this year, following approvals from the Western Railways.
Meanwhile, the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) has also undertaken the task of operating local trains between Vasai and Panvel railway stations. Under this project, about 11 new railway stations have been proposed between the two stations. Further, the changes like, raising the height of AC trains and changing the present signalling equipment have also been listed among other proposals.

To boost Maharashtra’s railway connectivity with South India, Western Railway (WR) is planning to construct platforms for outstation trains at Vasai Road railway station.
WR is contemplating construction of two platforms for outstation trains at the Vasai Road railway yard. The land required for these has been identified and surveyed by senior WR officials. The decision to construct these platforms is in response to demands of passengers residing in Vasai and Palghar district, who have asked for train connectivity with southern India. It will also decongest the presently-saturated outstation terminuses at Bandra and Mumbai Central.

land where these platforms presently deals with transportation of freight materials and will be made available to WR after the construction of the dedicated freight corridor (DFC), scheduled to be completed in 2022. East to west connectivity at the Vasai Road railway station will also be provided by the WR.
“We have surveyed the area and identified the construction work that will be required for the operation of outstation trains towards south India. There has been a long demand for operating trains from WR towards Hyderabad and other prominent cities.” said a senior WR official.
The platforms will be connected to the suburban railway stations as WR is also looking to operate local trains between Vasai and Panvel from the outstation platforms. However, the project requires approval from the Indian Railways and may be sent to the railway ministry later this year, following approvals from WR.
Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) is also working on a project of operating local trains between Vasai and Panvel railway stations and has proposed the construction of 11 new railway stations between the two stations. Apart from the construction of new railway stations, other proposals include making changes in the present railway stations, increasing the height of AC and changing the present signalling equipment.
Railway expert and retired member of the Railway board Subodh Jain said operating outstation trains from Vasai could be a challenge. “Operating outstation trains from Vasai Road could be cumbersome and difficult as the train links would be from Vasai- Diva-Panvel. A full-fledged terminal would be much more helpful.” said Jain, who has previously served as chief administrative officer of WR’s construction department and general manager of CR.
Passenger associations have welcomed the proposed platforms. “It is very difficult for people residing in Vasai, Mira Road to travel all the way to Dadar or Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus to board a train to South India. We have been demanding the operation of trains for a long time. This is a welcome move.” said Subash Gupta, president, Rail Yatri Parishad.
WR had first proposed the construction of a terminus at Vasai Road in 2013, when the plan did not materialise. The project was proposed again in 2017. In 2018, WR announced plans of constructing an outstation terminal at Vasai Road railway station. Construction of the terminal requires private and government land. The proposed new terminus would have four platforms, three stabling lines for outstation trains, and a new terminus building. The project was originally scheduled to be completed by 2023.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will depute 300 marshals at railway stations across the city by the end of the week to enforce the rule of wearing face masks in public places. Since local train services have resumed for the general public, Mumbai has seen a spike in the number of reported cases of Covid-19. Wearing the face mask is mandatory for all those travelling by local train.
Health officials believe the violation of Covid-safety norms while travelling in trains is a contributing factor to the uptick in the number of cases. To ensure Covid-19 appropriate behaviour among commuters, BMC will station 100 marshals on Western (WR), 100 marshals on Central (CR) Railway and 100 marshals on Harbour line.
“Since

we are still fighting the pandemic, people cannot be careless and need to follow all precautionary measures to stop further spread of the infection. So we have decided to keep marshals at railway stations to implement safety rules by issuing fines,” said additional municipal commissioner Suresh Kakani.
In April 2020, BMC had issued a directive that set a fine of ₹1,000 for being outdoors without wearing a mask and/ or spitting in public places. The penalty was reduced to ₹200 in September after citizens complained that the amount was too high. Since February 1, when local trains opened up to the general public after almost a year, on an average of 2 million people are using local trains daily. Although social distancing is among the prescribed Covid-safety norms, commuters have reported overcrowding and maintaining a one-metre distance from the next person to be a significant challenge.
“Buses and trains are as crowded as they used to be earlier [before the lockdown] due to reduced frequency and high demand for public transport. It is all the more essential, therefore, that masks be used by everyone,” said Dr Vispi Jokhi, chief executive officer, Masina Hospital.
Commuters have also complained that few are taking Covid guidelines seriously, particularly in matters like wearing face masks. “People keep their masks below the mouth, and don’t use a handkerchief when sneezing or coughing. Then they hold the side handle bars without sanitising their hands. We never know who is infected, which makes me anxious,” said Shreyas Salvi, who runs a construction firm and has been travelling daily from Vasai from Borivli for work.
Dr Jokhi said wearing face masks properly offered almost as much protection as the vaccine. “The [face] mask protocol is almost 80% as effective as the vaccine in terms of the control of the pandemic as it reduces the spray of droplets when worn over the nose and mouth. Although the vaccination drive in India is at a nascent stage, if coupled with the precautions of maintaining [face] mask protocol, then we have a better chance to control the pandemic and ensure the second wave doesn’t come in the country,” said Dr Jokhi.
