The Mysuru Division of South Western Railways and the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) will collaborate to conserve the old railway bridge across the Kabini near Nanjangud.
An earlier proposal mooted by the authorities to have a restaurant on wheels is also being revived to boost tourism.

Mysuru convener and heritage expert N.S. Rangaraju told The Hindu that multiple rounds of talks have already been completed and the details, including the cost pertaining to its conservation and development, are still being worked out.
The heritage committee members, including a few experts comprising structural engineers and architects, along with railway officials recently paid a visit to the Mysuru Rail Museum to apprise themselves of the rail heritage.
Dr. Rangaraju said the stakeholders were also toying with the idea of roping in corporates for funding the project. Apart from the bridge, the old metre-gauge rail – which has now been dismantled – will be re-laid and a few coaches will be converted in to a restaurant.
A railway coach converted into a cafetaria already exists in the museum and the heritage experts inspected it to check its feasibility. Even the Sujathapuram station will be developed as part of the project.
A similar proposal was made more than 10 years ago but the project did not take off. The bridge is located between Tandavpura and Nanjangud town on the Mysuru-Chamarajanagar section. But the authorities are confident of signing an MoU to kickstart the project after finetuning the final details.
However an area of concern is the seasonal flooding for a short duration that takes place when the discharge from the Kabini reservoir exceeds 75,000 cusecs during monsoon. In 1991, the bridge was submerged and hence the authorities are wary of such a situation and how the damage if any to the project could be avoided.
The bridge across the river Kabini or Kapila is nearly 280 years old and existed even before the advent of the railways. Reckoned to have been constructed in the 1730s, it was the initative of Dalvoy Devaraj, who was a local chieftain, and the metre-gauge link connecting Mysuru to Nanjangud was laid and commissioned in 1899.
Built in the Gothic style, the bridge runs parallel to the existing road bridge and the new railway bridge. It measures 225 metres in length and has 56 piers. The bridge was closed and decommissioned for traffic after the last metre-gauge train crossed it on January 17, 2007.
In October last year, the railway authorities visited the bridge and announced that it would be developed and conserved as a heritage structure given its historicity.

The much-awaited railway electrification works between Mysuru and Chamarajanagar will begin in a week and the Central Organisation for Railway Electrification, Indian Railways, has informed the South Western Railway, Mysuru division, about the works.
With the Ministry of Railways setting a target to electrify all railway routes by 2024, works have been taken up at several places across the country.
The Mysuru-Chamarajanagar rail route, which passes via Nanjangud, is 61-km long and the electrification work will be taken up at a cost of Rs 20 crore. Tenders were invited in the beginning of the year. Power

Guru Infratech Private Limited has taken the responsibility of electrification. It has been given 12 months’ time to complete the project.
Officials said, although one year is more for the project, they have given extra time, keeping in mind the rainy season, when it is not possible to execute the works.
It will be a challenge to take up the works on the bridge constructed across River Kapila. Electricity poles have to be installed and officials should inspect if they can be installed beside the existing pillars or whether they need to construct a new one from the riverbed. The works will be easy from Nanjangud to Chamarajanagar, said sources.
However, the works will not affect the rail service between Mysuru and Chamarajanagar. The electrification will facilitate the extension of Memu trains and there are possibilities of increasing the speed of the trains, benefiting the people of Mysuru, Nanjangud and Chamarajanagar.

KOZHIKODE: While the decades old proposals for two rail lines from Malabar to Karnataka‐ Thalassery‐ Mysuru line and the Nilambur‐ Nanjangud rail line have been held up due to long standing opposition from Karnataka, Kerala has now come up with a new proposal to have a common gateway through the Western Ghats to Karnataka by connecting the new line from Nilambur to Kalpetta and connect with the Thalassery‐ Mysuru line.
According to K‐ Rail authorities, M/s Systra, a Paris- based transportation consultant, who is currently working with Kerala Rail Development Corporation Ltd (KRDCL) as a general consultant, will conduct the survey for the Nilambur‐ Kalpetta stretch of the Nilambur‐ Nanjangud rail line.

MLA, C K Saseendran said that the alignment of the proposed Thalassery- Mysuru line has been changed so that it would reach Kalpetta where it will join the proposed Nilambur- Nanjangud rail line and proceed as a single line to Karnataka.
KRDCL managing director V Ajith Kumar in a letter to C K Saseeendran said that K- Rail has been entrusted the responsibility of preparing the DPR for Thalassery‐ Mysuru rail line and the Nilambur- Nanjangud rail line.
“As regards Nilambur- Nanjangud new line, it is proposed to have a new line from Nilambur to Kalpetta and connect with the Thalassery- Mysuru line so that there will be a common gateway through the Western Ghats," the letter said.
The Konkan Railway Corporation Limited had been engaged for carrying out the DPR study for Thalassery- Mysuru line and they have completed the survey work in the Kerala side and could not do the works in the Karnataka side due to objections from the neighbouring state. Karnataka has been opposing the two rail lines which have to pass through the forest stretches in Karnataka.
Meanwhile, the Nilgiri- Wayanad National Highway & Railway Action Committee said that the initiative was just an election stunt by the LDF government. “The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation had conducted the survey for the Nilambur- Nanjangud rail line and major part of the DPR work has also been completed but the organisation had to back off due to failure of the government to release the funds,” T M Rasheed, convener of the Action Council said.

A new line from Mysore to Kerala by any route will be beneficial to Kerala as well as Mysore. Now, CLT, CAN has no proper connection to Mysore. Via Mangalore or via Shoranur are circuitous.
This common line from Mysore upto end of forest area would be better.

The Nilgiri-Wayanad National Highway and Railway Action Committee, which has been campaigning for the Nilambur-Nanjangud railway line, is preparing to intensify their agitation demanding not to subvert the proposed project.
Speaking to The Hindu, action committee convener T.M. Rasheed said the Nilambur-Nanjangud railway line was included in the pink book of the Ministry of Railways in 2016 and the Centre had committed to allot ₹3,000 crore for the project. Subsequently, a company had been formed with the Centre and State to execute the project.
The Railway Board had also approved a proposal

to prepare a detailed project report and directed E. Sreedharan, Principal Advisor to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), to prepare it, Mr. Rasheed said.
The estimated cost of the project was ₹4,000 crore and the State government had allocated ₹8 crore for the preliminary works.
Public Works Minister G. Sudhakarana announced the launching of the project here on February 11, 2017, and issued an order to release ₹2 crore of the ₹8 crore to the DMRC account. But, the State government froze the transaction on the same day and directed Mr. Sreedharan to conduct a feasibility study on the Thalassery-Mysuru railway line. However, the report was against the project owing to technical and financial reasons.
The Nilambur-Nanjangud project was sabotaged after a lobby, working for the Thalassery-Mysuru railway line, misled the Chief Minister, Mr. Rasheed alleged. Te people’s representatives from the district had failed to bring the ground realities regarding the project before the Chief Minister.
The organisation, with the support of the civil society in the district, would stage a dharna in front of the collectorate here on Wednesday as part of it.
