Railway officials said the delay was because a plan to build a foot overbridge earlier had been shelved; they will now construct a subway, expected to be ready in three months, that will be convenient for crossing rail tracks
Mumbra Retibunder, which is considered to be the hotspot for intensive trespassing, leading to injuries and deaths, is finally getting an underpass. The Central Railway has processed a tender worth Rs 82 lakh to build a subway at the location with a completion period of three months.
After completion of the fifth and sixth

lines, the speed of trains passing the Retibunder slum colony, located between Mumbra and Kalwa, have increased. The locals have alleged that the instances of deaths and injuries while crossing rail tracks have increased.

Ancient sweet water well that once stood at the site of the Mumbra station complex has been embedded into the station design and retained on the platform
The brand-new railway platform of Mumbra station now has a natural resource treasure. The ancient sweet water well, that once stood at the site of the Mumbra station complex, has now been embedded into the station design and retained on the platform, which is used by lakhs of commuters every day.
The locals have claimed the well has been used by their families for at least

two generations. Raja Jangam, a resident, said, “After the construction of the new platform, a comparatively newer well was built away from the platform area. However, the old well has more water. It was once used by villagers residing nearby and still retains water.” “A lot has changed with the new platforms and the alignment. The old well has been a life source for us for generations,” another resident Daboda Patil added.

February 10, mid-day reported about rods jutting out of the staircase and from the metal sheets at the edge of platforms, posing a grievous threat to commuters. The report also pointed out the possible misuse of stairs built on either side of platform no. 3. Commuters could have seen that as an opportunity to easily cross the tracks, risking their lives. Central Railway teams moved quickly and removed all the rods protruding near platforms and under the staircase, and levelled the surfaces. The stairs have also been demolished.

The new Mumbra railway station platforms that opened last week are the only ones on the new Thane-Diva stretch without any escalator or lifts. The material for escalators is lying outside the station for years now, and a land dispute is being blamed.
The new platforms that opened last week are on the opposite side of the residential area due to changes in the alignment. The earlier CSMT-bound slow platform, which was abutting the road and did not require climbing any bridge, has now been converted into a fast local platform where trains do not halt. The slow platform has now been shifted to the other side, leading to commuters facing issues.

“New platform has begun functioning, but there are no escalators or lifts at Mumbra station. All our neighbouring stations have the facility, why not Mumbra?” asked Majid Shaikh, a daily commuter.
“The escalators were sanctioned for Mumbra station in 2018. The material for the installation of an escalator has been lying near the railway premises in dilapidated condition. The court case to acquire the land has been on for the past 10 years. The railway authorities, who were aware of this, should not have chosen that location for the escalator. It is a clear case of mismanagement and poor planning,” local activist Nazim Ansari said.
“Why is there not a single escalator at Mumbra railway station? After the installation of the third and fourth track, it is very difficult for an elderly, disabled person or pregnant woman to cross,” another commuter Muneef Shaikh said. Another commuter Sameer Malik said this was discrimination against commuters from Mumbra.
Escalators to be installed by April: Central Railway
Central Railway officials have said that escalators at Mumbra are being planned, and they will be installed by April 2022. “Three escalators, including one on the new platform, and two lifts (on platforms one and two) have been planned at Mumbra station. The work for installation is now on. Local residents had made a claim on a railway land where the work was to be done. Now, the issue has been resolved,” Central Railway chief public relations officer Shivaji Sutar said.

On Monday, occupants of slums, chawls and other illegal structures in Kalwa, Thane and Mumbra were issued notices, which stated that they could endanger railway tracks.
Indian Railways is conducting an anti-encroachment drive in Mumbai suburban rail network. As a part of this drive, authorities of Western and Central Railways are sending eviction notices to those occupying railway premises across Mumbai Metropolitan Region illegally. The step is being taken after Railway Board Member (Infrastructure) Sanjeev Mittal ordered all zones across the Indian Railways to remove encroachers by carrying out eviction proceedings. Following this, Western and Central Railways started an anti-encroachment drive with eviction notices being sent to all encroachers. An official was quoted in an IE report saying that an

action taken report has to be sent to the Railway Board by the end of the month.
On Monday, occupants of slums, chawls and other illegal structures in Kalwa, Thane and Mumbra were issued notices, which stated that they could endanger railway tracks. However, the railways’ drive against encroachment has been opposed by state Housing Minister Jitendra Awhad and MP Shrikant Shinde. Awhad tweeted saying that it was shocking to see Central Railways giving notices to premises or residents residing near the railway track for 70 years to vacate within seven days. He further said that they will not allow this to happen. Besides, Shinde also tweeted to Railways Minister Raosaheb Danve, asking about the notices issued by railways in Dombivali, Kalyan and Kalwa. The MP demanded a joint meeting of the local bodies, the railway administration and the state government on the issue.
In a response to Awhad’s tweet, Central Railway divisional engineer for coordination, also tweeted saying that at several locations, railway land has been encroached and therefore, vacation notices have been served by the national transporter as per provisions in The Railways Act, 1989. A Central Railway official said thousands of occupants are occupying railway premises along the tracks illegally. This leads to obstacles in operating rail services as well as extending the railway network, according to the official. Senior officials mentioned that railway land of over 60-70 hectares has been encroached by slum dwellers in Mumbai Metropolitan Region. An official said that slum dwellers’ rehabilitation comes under the prerogative of the state government and the national transporter does not have any policy regarding the same.
