While life came at a halt during the Coronavirus Pandemic Lockdown, Western Railway continued to progress with its various infrastructural developments. It is worthwhile to mention that by converting the adverse situation of DISASTER of global pandemic into an OPPORTUNITY, Western Railway has completed the construction works of 3 Foot Over Bridges (FOB), one skywalk & repair of one Road Over Bridge (ROB) on the Mumbai Suburban section, making best use of the lockdown situation.
According to a press release issued by Shri Sumit Thakur - Chief Public Relations Officer of Western Railway, the construction work of the FOBs, skywalk & ROB completed during the lockdown are of the Andheri (South FOB), Andheri - Jogeshwari (North MCGM FOB), Marine Lines (North FOB),Malad

(MCGM Skywalk) and Vasai Road- Nallasopara (Old ROB). The Andheri (South FOB) connects platforms 8/9, 6/7 and West side, measures 92 mtrs in length and 6 mtrs wide and was commissioned on 30th June, 2020. The Marine Lines (North FOB) connects platforms 1, 2, 3 & 4, measures 44 mtrs in length and 6 mtrs wide and was commissioned on 24th April, 2020. The Malad (MCGM Skywalk) connects MCGM FOB to the station, measures 141 mtrs in length and 6 mtrs wide which was commissioned on 9th May, 2020. The Vasai Road-Nallasopara (Old ROB) was repaired to provide a seamless east-west connectivity and measures 84.7 mtrs in length and 8 mtrs in width which was commissioned on 7th May, 2020.
Shri Thakur added that the latest commissioned project on 30th July, 2020 is the Andheri-Jogeshwari (North MCGM FOB). The work of the part of FOB connecting East side with MCGM skywalk going to metro station of Andheri station to West side at SV road through Masjid Galli at Andheri (West), has been completed by the unit of Deputy Chief Engineer, Construction(II), Churchgate, S & C of Western Railway. This FOB will be useful for public movement from Masjid area at east of Andheri to reach metro station of Andheri (West) and will also be useful for the 6th line project between Mumbai Central and Borivali stations.
The Andheri (North MCGM FOB) bridge is 40 m in length & 6.0 m width, crossing over all of the railway tracks and connecting East to West of Andheri. The work of FOB was started on 10th March, 2019 and was in completed on war footing during the lockdown to open for public to use. The major hurdle was to construct the foundation of the FOB between running lines and to shift the bunch of cables, location box, OHE mast and portal etc. Also, the approach for movement of hydraulic crane of 220 tonne capacity for launching of girders was not available, so approach was made over track from Andheri Subway to the location of site approx. 500 meter and launching of girder was done within granted block period and in limited area without any disturbance to adjacent Metro Bridge. The efforts of Western Railway to complete various infrastructure projects even with the limited available staff during the Coronavirus Pandemic lockdown is truly remarkable.

MUMBAI: The proposed

(WR) corridor—once the route is extended from Goregaon to Borivli.

were extended till Goregaon in April 2018. A further extension is being planned under Mumbai Urban Transport Project 3-A at a cost of Rs 825.6 crore.
WR will execute the project and the corridor will come up on the western side of the existing tracks.
As of now, there are four platforms at Malad, two each catering to fast and slow corridors, both in up and down directions.
The elevated station will mostly be an island platform with a length of 300 metre and 10-metre width.
WR’s chief public relations officer Ravinder Bhakar said, “The Harbour line platform at Malad will be built at an elevated level because of the space crunch at this station. This is the only platform to be built at such a height; other three stations at Goregaon, Kandivli and Borivli will be at ground level.”
None of the platforms on Harbour line have been built at an elevated level on WR, unlike on CR which has four.
Bhakar said, “A few railway structures will require relocation. The existing foot over bridges will require extension for passenger integration.
Elevated ramps and escalators will be provided for easy interchange.”
WR will also have to dismantle a private two-storey building and the BMC foot over bridge to make way for a ramp and a viaduct. The viaduct will end before Kandivli station. Work on the project will be carried out without disturbing operations on the existing network.
The Harbour corridor, after crossing north of Goregaon, will take the ramp from the western side of existing tracks. The flyover at Malad will cost Rs 145 crore and Malad’s elevated station Rs 65 crore. The elevated corridor between Goregaan and Kandivli will be 2.6km long.

MUMBAI: The city’s lifeline for some commuters has meant a death sentence. Murder cases on railways in the city doubled in 2018 from the year before, as did robberies. More than 37,000 cases of theft were reported on city railways last year alone, where commuters lost valuables worth Rs 69 crore. Overall, the number of railway crime cases in Mumbai in 2018 was more than thrice that in Pune, Nagpur and Aurangabad divisions put together.
Fights between commuters and interpersonal relationships breaking down led to a majority of the murders last year. In April 2018, a Mulund businessman, Deepak Patwa, was pushed off the platform and fell in the path of a running train. Police said a woman, Manisha Khakadiya, had accused

Patwa of touching her inappropriately and got into an altercation with him. A male commuter on the platform supported her and the two jostled with Patwa. Police booked the duo for pushing Patwa off, but a sessions court granted bail to Khakadiya. In some cases, railway premises were only used for disposing off bodies. For instance, in August, a man slit his gay partner's throat, fearing he would out their relationship, and pushed the body on tracks between Malad and Goregaon. The most shocking murder was that of Gujarat housewife Dariya Chaudhary on the Bhuj-Dadar Express in December. The killer attempted to sexually abuse her and also took away her jewellery.

The spurt in crime on railway routes speaks for the need to reinforce measures such as CCTV surveillance and deployment of guards in ladies compartments at all times. That an effort has been made to register all offences big or small will help provide an accurate representation of areas and stations which need more attention and thus help law enforcement.
“We made it our priority to solve murder and robbery cases as these are heinous crimes and the loss faced by a victim's family is immeasurable,” a senior officer from Mumbai GRP said. Four murder cases were reported in 2017, which rose to eight cases last year. Robbery surged from 496 cases to 994.
“Avenues for committing profit-oriented crimes are more in urban areas. So, a higher number of property offences would be found in Mumbai’s railways than any other part of Maharashtra. Mumbai is the country’s commercial capital and there is more money here," said Vijay Raghavan, professor, Centre for Criminology and Justice, School of Social Work, Tiss.
While the detection rate for robberies on railways across Maharashtra was high at 88% last year, that for thefts was a mere 10%. “Increased registration of crime can be said to be the reason behind the significant number of theft cases (over 48,000 reported in the state last year). We do not turn away complainants and register an FIR for theft even when a passenger has forgotten or lost his belongings. Detection rates are not very high as tracking down personal items such as clothes, documents or money is tough,” said a GRP officer.
Molestation cases on railways in Mumbai surged 63% year-on-year, from 97 in 2017 to 158.
