Owned by Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation (KSTDC), the Golden Chariot train, which commenced in 2008, was taken over by IRCTC in January 2020 for operations, marketing and maintenance. The Golden Chariot will hit the tracks in a new look on a week-long itinerary, the statement said.
The renewed train has a host of new features including complimentary Wi-Fi and OTT streaming onboard, complimentary house pours and wines, choice of international and Indian cuisines, services of an experienced Tour Director onboard, all monument entry tickets, off-board evenings with meals and cultural performances.
Destinations on the Golden Chariot route have been chosen to showcase the architecture, culture and history of the region it traverses through.

IRCTC takes over marketing and operations of luxury train from KSTDC
Karnataka’s plush luxury train, the Golden Chariot, is ready to resume operations in January.
Run by the Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation (KSTDC), the train was stopped last year, with the authorities citing dwindling business and high costs.
The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) took over the marketing and operations in

early 2000, but the pandemic came in the way of resuming operations.
“The IRCTC runs Maharaja Express and has the experience of making luxury trains profitable. KSTDC still owns the train and we are working jointly to promote it,” an IRCTC official from the Bengaluru corporate office told Metrolife. At the moment, renovation and maintenance is underway. The refurbished train is set to roll on January 17, 2021.
New, improved
The Golden Chariot boasts a spa and fitness centre, two restaurants, 13 double bed cabins, and 30 twin bed cabins (one for specially abled passengers), all spread over 18 coaches.
The restoration, now in progress, makes the train swankier than ever before, with new upholstery, refurbished rooms and bathrooms, new linen and cutlery.
Every cabin has a smart TV with complimentary Wi-Fi. CCTVs and fire precautions are being upgraded.
“It is like a five-star hotel on tracks. We have designed everything such a way that the guest does not feel the need to step out for anything, except to explore the destination at which the train has halted,” the official says.
Covid norms
New safety norms are in place. Coaches and passenger luggage are disinfected at regular intervals, and restaurants disinfected after every meal, the official says. Staff get sanitation kits, masks, gloves and sanitisers are provided in each room.
Packages
The first tour starts from January 2021 and the season ends in March. The train will be to and from Bengaluru.
Tourists have a choice of three packages:
Pride of Karnataka: Six nights, seven days. Itinerary covers Bandipur National Park, Mysuru, Halebidu, Chikmagalur, Aihole, Pattadakal, Hampi and Goa.
Jewels of South: Six nights, seven days. Itinerary covers Mysuru, Hampi, Mahabalipuram, Thanjavur, Chettinad, Kumarakom and Kochi.
Glimpses of Karnataka: Three nights, four days. Itinerary covers Bandipur, Mysore and Hampi.
“We have handpicked destinations that are accessible, clean and enjoyable. The real star of the journey is the train and we want people to enjoy it in its entirety,” says an IRCTC official.
What’s the Golden Chariot?Golden Chariot commenced operations in 2008, as a joint initiative between the Karnataka government and the railway ministry. Designed on the lines of ‘Palace on Wheels’, this luxury train connects tourist spots in Karnataka, Goa, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry. It is named after the iconic stone chariot at the Vitthala Temple in Hampi.
Huge discounts this yearThe Golden Chariot covers places in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala before returning to Bengaluru. While luxury trains usually target international passengers, this year, the spotlight is on domestic travellers.Normally, the ticket costs about Rs 4 lakh for a seven-day trip on the Golden Chariot. The current packages allow two passengers to travel at the same cost, by allowing a 50 per cent discount on companion bookings.Guests can now choose to travel for two nights- three days on any of journeys for just Rs 59,999 per person. An online booking discount of 35 per cent is also being offered now. People can make bookings by visiting an IRCTC office, or through their website (www.irctc.co.in).To know more, visit www.goldenchariot.org or call 85959 31291.
Fewer on boardThe train will carry 24 to 70 passengers as opposed to the full capacity of 144 passengers.

In its tenth year, south India’s only luxury train, the Golden Chariot, will not run during its operational season owing to maintenance and refurbishment work, as well as in anticipation of a new agency taking over soon.
The Golden Chariot is operated from October to March. The train runs two tours: Pride of South (Bengaluru, Kabini, Mysuru, Hassan, Hampi, Badami, and Goa), and Southern Splendour (Bengaluru, Chennai, Mahabalipuram, Puducherry, Thanjavur, Madurai, Thiruvananthapuram, Kovalam, and Kochi).
Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation (KSTDC) managing director Kumar Pushkar told The Hindu that the process of selecting

a new company was in its final stages, owing to which the train would not be operated this season.
After bringing on board a new agency, they will be in charge of marketing, hospitality, and sales, unlike before when the company was only in charge of hospitality. “The tenders took some time. We want a good number of people to travel in the train. As a government agency, we (the KSTDC) do not have that kind of reach. We want an agency with a good network across the world,” Mr. Pushkar said.
The aim is to not only make profits, but also promote tourism in Karnataka and south India, he added.
An upgrade
The train, with its distinct purple outer body, is being refurbished. Air suspension, which will make the train ride smoother, bio-toilets, and CCTV cameras are among the new additions. The outer branding of the train will also see a rejig, but will remain similar to the existing one. “We have taken up major maintenance and refurbishment work as it has been 10 years. We do not want to start trips before it is over,” the managing director said.
A non-operational season would not lead to major losses, Mr. Pushkar clarified, as the KSTDC was not paying haulage charges to the Railways.
Earlier this year, the Railway Board agreed to a revenue-sharing ratio of 56:44 between the Indian Railways and the KSTDC for 2017–18, bringing major relief to the Karnataka government as the high haulage charges, coupled with poor occupancy rates of around 35%, had left the train’s finances in a poor state.
The KSTDC may run a few promotional trips before commencing its operational season next year, officials said.

The Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation (KSTDC) is all set to relaunch the state’s own luxury express, Golden Chariot.
The KSTDC has called for fresh tenders for its hospitality and marketing partners.
The tenders will close this month end and by mid-October the new partners will be finalised. The Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation’s contract with Maple Group of Hotels ended early this year.
“The

new company will have to take care of hospitality, marketing, ticket sale and promotions at domestic and international platforms. The interiors of the train would also be redone by the new company, while the basic concept of the train will remain the same (the number of coaches, bar and restaurant, gymnasium and spa).”
“So one can say that the train will be relaunched soon. Thus it is likely that the train might not run this tourism season (October to February), but will have to operate from September, 2019,” said a KSTDC official. It is also likely that the ticket fare would come down and the number of trips will increase as the haulage charges with the Indian railways have been revised.
The new company will have to ensure that a minimum of 15 trips are maintained and there is an increase in the number of trips every year.

MYSURU: South India’s only luxury train, Karnataka’s Golden Chariot, is incurring huge losses. Ever since it was launched by the Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation in March 2008, it has incurred losses of over Rs 40 crore. The government is now coming up with an attractive train design with more facilities and thinking of devising attractive packages to attract tourists. On an average, each trip has around 35% occupancy even though the train passes through many heritage places, from Hampi to Mysuru. The high haulage charges imposed by the Railways is more than the train’s net revenue. The Golden Chariot, which is a joint venture between the Karnataka government and railways, has 19 luxury cabins. The KSTDC pays between Rs 50 lakh and Rs 55 lakh per trip as haulage charges to the Railways. “Since its launch, we’ve been incurring losses of around Rs 4 crore every year. We have decided...

to change the design,” said tourism minister SR Mahesh who inspected the train at the Central Workshop in Ashokapuram where the train comes for periodic overhauling. There were some technical problems including air-conditioning, fitting of biotoilets and replacing glass sheet with clear glass. Doubtful starter for Dasara“The train is undergoing overhauling and the design will be changed. We’ll be re-branding the Golden Chariot. Normally, the service starts during Dasara, but this time, it’s a doubtful starter. The contract for the new operator will be given such that we won’t incur losses. Preference will be given to those having contacts with international agencies,” added Kumar Pushkar, managing director, KSTDC.
