UTTARPARA/BARASAT: A day after two male passengers died after they were allegedly pushed off the all women Matribhumi Local train by RPF constables at Hind Motor and Howrah stations, police were on alert at all stations on both the Howrah and Sealdah sections. While families of the victims and their neighbours in Hind Motor and Bhadreswar were united in condemning the RPF, senior railway officials claimed that Dipu Sharma, the Hind Motor victim, himself fell off the train.
While railway authorities have, however, launched a departmental inquiry on the incident, the accused RPF constable Rajanigandha Naskar has been admitted to the ICU of the railway hospital to nurse injuries he sustained in the melee during Tuesday's clash.

the clash still fresh on passengers' minds, alert male commuters prevented some men who tried boarding the Matribhumi local that reached Barasat station at 9.40 a.m. on Wednesday. Incidentally, the row over the Matribhumi local was sparked at Khardah station on August 18, exactly three months ago. Women passengers turned violent when the railway authorities announced that male passengers would be allowed on three compartments of the Matribhumi local.
At the Hind Motor home of Tuesday's victim Dipu Sharma, his wailing parents Sushma Devi and Madan Lal Sharma said their son worked in a private company at Tikiapara and was the sole earning member of the family. "Our family can survive only if my daughter-in-law is given a job in the railways," said Madan Lal.
The home of Bhadreswar victim Jang Bahadur Yadav was deserted on Wednesday. Yadav died of suffocation on Tuesday evening at a Howrah station platform that was chockablock with passengers after train services were disrupted for four hours from 7.50 p.m. following trouble at Uttarpara over Dipu's death.
