ब्रिटिश काल 1861 में पटना स्टेशन के रूप में स्थापित पटना साहिब (पटना सिटी) स्टेशन 161 वर्ष का हो गया। इसे 1862 में दानापुर-लखीसराय रेलखंड (इकहरी लाइन, ब्रौड गेज) के साथ स्थापित किया गया था। 1867 में दानापुर से फतुहा-दानापुर के बीच रेलवे लाइन के दोहरीकरण संपन्न हुआ। पटना साहिब स्टेशन कभी बेगमपुर स्टेशन के नाम से भी जाना जाता था। बुजुर्ग बताते हैं कि कुछ अवधि के लिए यह स्टेशन बांकीपुर स्टेशन के नाम से जाना जाता था। बाद में गया रेलवे लाइन से जब पटना को जोड़ा गया तब वर्ष 1939 में पटना जंक्शन का निर्माण हुआ। इसके बाद ही पुराने पटना स्टेशन का नाम बदल कर पटना सिटी किया गया।
