MEMU Service in SER
In 1990’s Indian Railways’ developed Mainline Electrical Multiple Units (MEMUs) having
10’8” (32512 mm) wide coaches, which were introduced in Asansol-Adra, Kharagpur- Tatanagar
section of the railway. These have advantages over conventional 12 feet (36576 mm) wide bodies
stock,...
more... which are unsuitable for introduction in some electrified routes due to restrictive
clearances, low level platforms and limitations of line capacities.
The operational features of MEMUs train include fast acceleration, deceleration and braking with
Electro-pneumatic brakes with provision of Schaku Couplers. These enable MEMUs suitable to
function as stopping trains while maintaining the average speeds matching with the fast Mail or
Express train without slowing down the system.
MEMU Train Service is a new era for transportation of users in semi-urban and urban area. 8-car
MEMU rake consists of two units; each comprising of one driving motor coach and three trailer
coaches i.e. 1 unit = 1 MC + 3 TC. The following main salient features have made MEMU more
passenger friendly:
Pollution free and environment-friendly.
Carry 2324 passengers as against 1800 in the conventional trains.
Foot-boards provided for entraining and detraining of passengers from/to low-level
platforms.
Wider Seats with more leg space in between the rows for better comforts, wide racks for
luggage.
Vestibule arrangement facilities for inter-coach mobility of passengers.
