A super clash between two legendary trains connecting the important metros of India : Mumbai and Kolkatta. I was lucky enough to capture this and I was unaware of the Gitanjali Express which was coming from behind. Now with CSTM CR line all set to get AC'fied, this could well be the last few days with these two trains with their WCAM link. Both these trains are expected to be upgraded to the respective WAP4/5/7 link. Both the trains were powered by KYN WCAM3. Thanks for the hello WCAM's.
Trains : 12860 HWH CSTM Gitanjali Express and 12809 CSTM HWH Mail (via Nagpur).
Location
...
: Bhandup, CR
Both the trains follow the route : Dadar, Kalyan, Nashik Road, Bhusaval, Akola, Badnera, Nagpur, Durg, Raipur, Bilaspur, Jharsuguda, Rourkela, Chakradharpur, Tatanagar, Kharagpur and Santragachi to reach Howrah Junction and vice versa.

A single loco should be expected to run thru the entire 1966 km stretch, no change enroute (except the additions/substraction at Kasara/Igatpuri).

That was my thought as well. While Gitanjali has yellow plate (ECoR), Mumbai Mail has red (SER), the first train was shorter and had fewer AC coaches than Mumbai Mail (24-coacher, 6 AC).

I think WAG-7 poses two issues: Acceleration (geared to pull more load not to accelerate quickly) and 100kmph limit. Contrast this with WAP-7 (which excels in acceleration and has higher top speed). WAP-4 is similar to WAP-7 with better acceleration and top speed than WAG-7. If the train slows down, or is stopped for lack of clearance, WAG-7 will trail and cannot make up with speed either whereas WAP-4 locos will pull at 110+. But more importantly, the train simply doesn't have decent priority, and worse, can't make up for the losses.
NGP-BSP section (411km), for example, has 5:50 for the train with one stop (Raipur, 5 minutes). Gitanjali Express has five stops (Bhandara, 2; Gondia, 2; Rajnandgaon, 2; Durg, 5; Raipur,

10), and runs the distance in 6:10. It almost does not get delayed on this stretch despite of these stoppages (easier to make up time without stops than with). OTOH, the ACSF's average delay in this section is 40 minutes. This is happening for all three reasons:
1- Lack of priority (may be even on triple line section, from Durg to Bilaspur)
2- Lack of acceleration from slow downs/unscheduled stoppages (WAG-7 issue, despite of using only 13 coaches or so)
3- Lack of top speed (100 kmph basically limits the train with little to no wiggle room to make up by going 110+, likely only to 80-95).

I agree. I grew up traveling between Bombay and Calcutta in its glory days. It is still an excellent train, runs on time and gets good priority. But, that is where the Gitanjali heritage begins and ends today. Now, it is overload of stoppages, and that ugly RSA. If IR can't afford four dedicated rakes for this train, may be it should consider getting it three LHB rakes, and make it a Duronto with a few stops. It should be possible to cover the distance in about 25.30-26 hours:
CSTM: 06.00
Bhusaval: 12.00-12.10
...

Akola: 13.45-13.50
Nagpur: 17.00-17.10
Durg: 20.20-20.25
Raipur: 21.00-21.05
Bilaspur: 22.25-22.35
Rourkela: 02.05-02.10
Tatanagar: 04.05-04.15
Howrah: 07.45.
Return: 19.45, reaching Mumbai around 21.30. (12-hour layover with SER, 8+ hours in Mumbai).

It is possible actually, esp if there is a will to improve the system and take advantage of higher speed capacity that LHB rakes can utilize (but don't, esp on this route). It appears that much of TT is designed around 90km/h cruising speed, higher speeds only to make up (plus a boat load of buffer many of these trains are given). Simply raising it to 105 km/h for LHB rakes would enable running the distance in 25.5 hours (Duronto does so in about 26 hours, and while they don't have commercial stops they do have tech stops). This, of course, assumes that the tracks can support 120-125 km/h for make up time, which I think should be possible.

Looks like Shalimar-LTT Express to me (two AC coaches, and a few HCPVs).
