Pretty much the same as today. I recall boarding the train at about 2 am at Raipur (around 1979-80 for the first time), and reaching Mumbai around 9.30 pm. The stops included Durg (loco change to diesel), Nagpur (loco change, continued diesel), Akola, Bhusaval (loco change to WCAM electric), technical stop at Igatpuri (bankers) and Kasara (bankers detached), Kalyan, Dadar and VT.
I also recall someone boarding Gitanjali from Howrah with plans to get off at Kharagpur (even though the distance restriction of 600 km applied), and he was in for a...
more... shock when Gitanjali took him to Tatanagar instead (first stop).
Only in last decade stops have multiplied (shamelessly) to including Nasik, Malkapur, Shegaon, Wardha, Bhandara, Raigarh etc. Heck, they even tried Jhargram for goodness sake.
