I understand that online purchase of tickets are available 60 days in advance at 8:00 AM. I just bought three tickets from NDLS (New Delhi) to NJP (New Jalpaiguri) on the Dibrgarh Rajdhani at 8:00 AM on October 26, 2013 for a journey on December 25, 2013. However, it showed only two first class tickets available under general quota. I don't understand how can only two tickets be available in a train for first class just when the purchase option is opening at 8:00 AM? Therefore, my own and my wife's ticket came as confirmed but my nine year old son's ticket came as RQWL 1. What does this mean and do I have to refund these tickets and buy something else?

first class ac has very few seats. a total of 24 when it comes to this train. out of this 20% are reserved for high official quota and about 60% for end to end/major station quota. so the total quota of seats was 2 and you booked both of them as soon as the booking opened. had you booked upto guwahati u wd hv got all confirmed. njp, being an intermediate station has fewer quota. anyways, hold on to this ticket as it has all chances to get confirmed by the date of journey.

Actually there is quota system in IR.So different stations have different quota.if that is exhausted, then people get W/L.
Now in ur case i donot have any idea whether that RQWL will get confirm or not.But still there are 5 berths(at the time of writing this) available in 1AC tfor NDLS-GHY.Since ur child age is 9 years (child age) so even if you book the ticket till GHY,fare difference will be Rs 560 only. But you will get confirmed berth.Only thing i donot know is that whether you and your child will get berth in same cabin or not.may be you and your child get berth in different cabin(this may be possible in scenario of booking ur child ticket till GHY)
