Premium trains are always a ghate ka sauda as compared to SF trains due to flexifare & higher base fare.
Even then people clamour for introduction of these premium trains is really surprising.

It has been reported today in newspaper that IR has collected additional 240 crore Rs from premium trains in current financial year (i.e. since sep-16) due to flexifare in...
more... spite of reduced occupancy of these trains. So IR can earn extra 500 crore Rs per annum from premium trains. Next FY Humsafar, Tejas too join the flexi-brigade of IR to mint more money.

IR had worked inefficiently since independence resulting in inadequate capacity augmentation & extreme shortage of supply of seats/ berths on most of the routes, and now it is taking full advantage of this shortage (i.e. its chronic inefficiency) by charging flexi fare etc. People pay through nose because there is no alternative, thanks to monopoly of IR over rail transportation.
