Yes, RCF tried to modify the LHB rakes and make them self-generating like the traditional ICF rakes. This would have enabled them to remove the 2 extra EOG's and use LHB coaches for normal trains. The experiment results were apparently not so satisfactory. RCF managed to identify one configuration that had a very low failure rate. But the modified coaches had to be restricted to 105kmph and moreover, the components were manufactured by only one supplier and was thus uneconomical. This test rake is running with NR now.
Later, they tried to use H-LHB as a trade-off of sorts, but this also eventually ran into some roadblocks as IR decided to go ahead with LHB + HOG/EOG...
more... arrangement only.
And during this time, CLW spent more time perfecting the WAP7 and ignored adding HOG to the WAP4 and WAP5 locos which were already pretty much optimized and fully operational and could have been used with LHB coaches from as early as 2005!!
The story of LHB from the time they were introduced was a story of lack of co-ordination between CLW and ICF/RCF delaying a large scale deployment.
