Looking at availability, this train doesn't look to be popular. Hardly 10% seats booked even for this week... white elephant?? What is the reason for low demand for this train on such a high demand route...?? fare??

It may have to do with the fact that there is a 20% premium on top of the king right behind it, and if average delay is accounted for, it basically takes the same time as the old king. The old king also connects New Delhi proper to Mumbai proper, while the special is more of a suburban cpnnector.

whenever it comes to late running of 12398 "महा"-बोधि सुपरफास्ट एक्सप्रेस people blame NCR. for some, the zone has to be blamed even with irrelevant and vague reasons. the one month history shows that this train has never reached Aligarh Jn it's first halt timely the reason is very well known to others yet some people try to put curtains by citing the time-table is very much correct. on an average this train takes one hour to cross NR sometimes 50 minutes, the minimum i observed till date is 45 minutes. gets off-TT at ALJN, NCR set rules clearly state a train delayed by 15 minutes gets off-TT and the priority starts decreasing as the delays increase. when people say the TT is not fit, others preach being an admin you should not say like this.

speed-up between ndls - cnb has ruined this train, the timetable is set for 130 mps whereas the train has 110 mps.

Vaishali has a practical TT for a 110 km/h train (5:45 hour run), is non-stop and if delayed by a few minutes, won't have to worry about being overtaken and further get delayed.
Mahabodhi has a ridiculous TT for a 110 km/h train, both to Aligarh and then even worse from there thru Kanpur, amounting to an impractical 5 hour run. It is also closely followed by Bihar SK which has a reasonable schedule (like Vikramshila, 6 hours).
The SK can be expected to run on time. Mahabodhi cannot. And that means,

it will be overtaken by SK, delaying Mahabodhi. Now, that it is already delayed and has overly aggressive TT thru CNB, it gets killed by other trains (even if not overtaken, 93 km/h average is very high for a normal schedule). Hence the delays. Mahabodhi would do better if it were slotted behind SK, and expected to run the distance in 6 hours.

Good to know. However, categorization would also depend on number of services available. Many large cities cannot make A1 category if they don't have sufficient services to begin with (they will use a nearby railhead that, while being smaller, becomes a key station). Commercial contribution for any station should go up with better services/connectivity.

I think GPS is fairly reliable within a small error. I recorded Jnaneswari doing 114-115 between Badnera and Wardha in December (and of course was running well ahead of its schedule), probably 110 in reality with minor error. I also recorded Habibganj Shatabdi at 157 km, probably 150 in reality, (during the fog days, but that run was short lived as the rest of the way the train crawled at 70-75).

These days, every other day, we are getting requests from members to allow email login to their FB-based IRI account. 10 years ago, we had given the option for users to login through FaceBook - in retrospect, this was a mistake. These days, apparently, users are quitting FaceBook in droves because...
